José Gallardo Díaz was found dying near a reservoir later labeled “Sleepy Lagoon,” and his death became the center of a heavily publicized case that heightened anti–Mexican American sentiment and helped criminalize zoot-suited youth in the public imagination.
The Sleepy Lagoon defendants’ trial began in October 1942; courtroom practices and media framing reinforced stereotypes about Mexican American youth culture, with zoot suits repeatedly invoked as visual shorthand for supposed criminality.
On January 13, 1943, multiple defendants were convicted (including second-degree murder convictions), deepening community activism and contributing to a wider climate in which zoot-suited Mexican American youth were targeted and portrayed as dangerous.
From June 3–8, 1943, groups of U.S. servicemen, joined by some civilians, attacked zoot-suit wearers—especially Mexican American youth—stripping, beating, and humiliating victims while police actions disproportionately arrested those targeted, not the attackers.

In 1944, Montreal experienced zoot-suit–related disturbances, illustrating that wartime conflicts over youth style, race, and public order extended beyond Los Angeles and were part of a wider North American pattern.
In People v. Zammora, the California Court of Appeal reversed the convictions on October 4, 1944, citing insufficient evidence and criticizing trial conduct—an outcome that became central to later understandings of wartime racialization and the policing of zoot-suit youth.
