Early in the Principate, Augustus pushed a revival of “traditional” Roman public dress. Suetonius reports him ordering officials (aediles) to bar men not wearing the toga from the Forum and its surroundings, reinforcing the garment’s role as a visible marker of Roman civic identity and elite decorum.
Candidates for office adopted the toga candida, a toga whitened (e.g., with chalk) to appear especially bright. The practice helped make candidates visually conspicuous in public spaces and is the etymological source of the English word “candidate.”
By the early Imperial period, senatorial rank was commonly marked by the latus clavus (laticlave)—a broad purple stripe on the senator’s tunic worn under the toga. This visual code distinguished senators from equestrians (associated with narrower stripes) within Rome’s rigid status hierarchy.
The toga praetexta (white with a purple border) functioned as a key marker of official and protected status—worn by curule magistrates and some priesthoods, and also by freeborn youths before coming of age. In elite civic ritual, the purple edging visually communicated sanctioned authority and legal privilege.
In triumphal ceremonies, a victorious commander wore the toga picta—a solid purple, gold-embroidered toga—signaling extraordinary, quasi-sacral prestige. The garment’s association with triumph and high magistracy helped anchor later imperial monopolization of “true” purple as a status symbol.
Cassius Dio records that under Tiberius, an edict forbade men to wear silk clothing. Such measures illustrate how Roman rulers periodically attempted to curb elite display through dress regulation and to police the boundary between Roman and “foreign” luxury fashions.
Diocletian’s Edict on Maximum Prices set ceilings for many goods, including luxury textiles and dyes. Surviving lists show very high official prices for purple-dyed materials (and associated silk entries), underscoring why purple functioned as a potent elite and court status marker in Late Roman society.
A law issued in 382 CE (Codex Theodosianus 14.10.1, as commonly cited) allowed senators in Rome to use the paenula as everyday wear but required the toga for official duties; penalties could include loss of rank/authority. This shows the toga’s narrowing role into a regulated, ceremonial uniform for the senatorial elite.
The Missorium of Theodosius I (made for the emperor’s decennalia) provides a major visual witness to late imperial ceremonial attire. It shows the emperors in richly decorated dress with jeweled fastenings and rank-indicating ornamentation, reflecting how court clothing increasingly diverged from earlier, more “Republican” toga ideals.
By Late Antiquity, “Tyrian purple” (and imperial purple textiles more broadly) became increasingly restricted and strongly associated with the emperor and court. Sources note tightened sumptuary control and the development of state oversight/monopoly frameworks, reflecting purple’s political potency as a sign of sovereignty.
With the collapse of centralized imperial authority in the West (traditionally dated to 476 CE), Roman senatorial institutions and their dress codes lost much of their political footing. The toga—already largely ceremonial and elite—did not survive as a living public uniform in post-imperial western kingdoms, which favored other late-Roman military and court styles.
Elite late-Roman consular diptychs depict officeholders in highly formal, protocol-driven dress (including richly ornamented, carefully arranged togas associated with high ceremony). These objects help document how senatorial/consular display persisted as an official visual language even as everyday toga-wearing declined.
