Under the Ptolemies, Greek influence became more visible in elite representation, including draped looks and hairstyles alongside Egyptian traditions. Material linked to Tutankhamun includes inscribed linen from his embalming cache, showing how linen was used not only for clothing but also for mummification and ritual handling. This connects elite dress to religion and the afterlife, where textile quality and labeling could carry official meaning.
A pair of sandals from Tutankhamun’s burial equipment was decorated so the king would symbolically trample bound enemies, linking clothing items to royal power messages. Even everyday objects like footwear could be designed to communicate authority and cosmic order, not just comfort.
Textiles from the tomb of Kha (an 18th Dynasty official) provide concrete evidence for well-made linen garments, including a light linen tunic preserved with clear dating and findspot information. In the New Kingdom, elite fashion often emphasized very fine linen, sometimes pleated, and layered looks that could include sheer fabric. These choices made clothing a clearer social signal: skill-intensive production and careful finishing showed access to labor, resources, and court culture.
Over time, garments became more varied in cut and layering, including longer and more structured pieces alongside traditional wraps. This shift mattered because it points to growing tailoring skills and changing ideas about formal appearance, especially for officials and the wealthy.
In the Old Kingdom, many men wore a wrapped linen kilt (often called a schenti/shendyt in modern writing), while women are frequently shown in long, close-fitting dresses held by shoulder straps.
