The chiton—a rectangular tunic (linen Ionic or wool Doric) secured at the shoulders and belted—was worn by Greek men and women from the Archaic through the Hellenistic period, providing a core base-layer that would be styled differently over time.
The himation, a heavy rectangular wrap worn over a chiton and/or peplos, is attested from the Archaic era onward and remained a key outer garment through the Hellenistic period, with draping choices signaling modesty, status, and role.
In the Archaic period, women’s dress is commonly represented with the peplos (a wool rectangle with an overfold/apoptygma, pinned at the shoulders), often paired with a cloak/wrap (such as a himation), establishing a recognizable “Greek” silhouette in art.
In Classical Athens, the making of a sacred peplos for Athena became embedded in civic-religious practice: a peplos was woven and presented at the Panathenaic festival cycle, linking textile production, women’s labor, and public ritual.
By the 5th century BCE, a long chiton—earlier associated with men in some contexts—was adopted broadly for women’s dress, reflecting evolving tastes and social meanings around “traditional” versus “luxurious/foreign” styles.
The exomis (a short, one-shouldered belted tunic) served practical needs for work and mobility and is described as becoming the principal tunic for hoplites in the later 5th century BCE, highlighting functional specialization within Greek dress.
The chlamys, a short cloak fastened at the right shoulder, was worn by men for riding, hunting, and military contexts and is well attested in Classical and Hellenistic imagery—an alternative to the fuller himation with a more martial, mobile association.
By the 4th century BCE, chitons could feature more elaborate borders and patterns, signaling increased emphasis on display and luxury textiles; some elite critics treated such embellishment as evidence of excess rather than “simplicity.”
As Macedonian power reshaped the Greek world, items viewed as distinctly Macedonian—especially the chlamys and kausia (cap)—became prominent markers within broader Hellenistic visual culture, aligning dress with military identity and rulership imagery.
Across the Hellenistic kingdoms, Greek garments (chiton, himation, chlamys) continued but were often realized in more varied materials and richer surface effects, reflecting long-distance exchange and courtly display while preserving recognizably Greek draped constructions.
Octavian’s victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium (2 September 31 BCE) marked the decisive collapse of Ptolemaic power and is commonly used as a key endpoint for the Hellenistic era—after which Greek dress traditions persisted under Roman rule in new social frameworks.
