Mineralized threads preserved on a copper bead from a Neolithic burial at Mehrgarh were identified as cotton (Gossypium sp.). This find is widely cited as the earliest known cotton evidence in the Old World, showing that plant-fiber string and likely textiles were already part of personal adornment in the region before Indus cities formed.
Across the 4th millennium BCE, communities in the broader Indus region developed specialized crafts (such as beadmaking and other personal ornaments) that later became central to Indus urban life. These traditions mattered because city-era clothing and identity relied heavily on craft supply chains: thread, beads, shells, and metals had to be produced and distributed at scale.
A small cotton cloth fragment adhered to a silver object from Mohenjo-daro has been reported and discussed in later scholarship, with a commonly cited date range around 3000–2750 BCE. Even though such organic textiles rarely survive in Indus soils, this example helps confirm that woven cotton was available and could be used with luxury containers and personal items.
By the Mature Harappan (urban) phase, large cities such as Harappa and Mohenjo-daro were producing and using ornaments in many materials—stone, shell, faience (a glassy, silica-based material), and metals. This shift mattered for dress because jewelry and body decoration became a major, visible way people expressed identity even when most clothing itself did not survive archaeologically.
Spindle whorls—small weights used on spindles to twist fibers into thread—are among the practical tools linked to textile production in Indus contexts. A shell spindle-whorl (listed as a spindle whorl or possible spindle whorl) from Mohenjo-daro is dated in the British Museum’s catalog to roughly 2500–2000 BCE, reinforcing that thread-making was part of everyday material culture.
Indus craftspeople made durable, brightly colored ornaments—especially faience bangles and shell bangles—that could be worn in large numbers. These objects mattered because they were highly visible, standardized in some forms, and widely distributed, suggesting shared style preferences across cities and smaller settlements.
The small bronze statuette known as the “Dancing Girl” from Mohenjo-daro (commonly dated within the 2700–2100 BCE range) shows a young woman adorned with extensive bangles and a necklace, with no clearly depicted garment. This image is important for dress history because it highlights how jewelry and body presentation could be central to appearance, even when clothing is not emphasized in the surviving art.
At Chanhu-daro, archaeologists have identified an area described as a bead-making factory or workshop, including evidence such as a furnace and large quantities of worked materials. This matters for Indus dress because it shows ornamentation was supported by specialized production centers that could supply cities with carnelian, shell, steatite, metal, terracotta, and faience jewelry.
The steatite bust often called the “Priest-King” (dated around 2000–1900 BCE by many references) shows a draped garment with repeated trefoil-like motifs and an armband. It matters because it is one of the clearest Indus representations of clothing: a wrapped or draped textile worn with elite-looking accessories, suggesting some garments were patterned and carefully arranged.
Excavations at Dholavira documented thousands of beads and a wide range of bead types, showing intensive ornament use and craft activity. This strengthens the picture of Indus dress as a system that depended on personal adornment—necklaces, bangles, and other worn items—circulating through trade and local manufacture across the civilization’s wide geography.
After about 1900 BCE, the Mature Indus urban system declined, with shifts toward smaller settlements and changing material culture (often called Late or Post-Urban/Post-Harappan phases). For dress history, this transition matters because the strong, shared urban style signals—standardized ornaments and widespread craft distribution—became less uniform, and evidence increasingly comes from regional patterns rather than big-city assemblages.
By roughly 1300 BCE, the Indus Valley tradition had transformed into later regional cultures, ending the Indus-era city network that supported long-distance standardization in dress and ornament. However, the Indus emphasis on bangles, beads, and body ornamentation left a lasting legacy in South Asian material culture, visible in the long continuity of personal jewelry traditions.
