As cities grew in southern Mesopotamia, institutions increasingly organized sheep raising and woolworking. Wool textiles became economically important and were tied to systems that supported workers with staple rations (regular basic payments), including wool. This set the material foundation for later Sumerian and Akkadian clothing traditions.
Some of the earliest Sumerian images show people in simple kilts or closely fitted, patterned garments often described as “net-dresses.” Upper bodies are frequently shown bare, suggesting that early dress emphasized wrapped lower-body garments. These images provide a starting point for tracking how Mesopotamian clothing changed over time.
By the Early Dynastic period, a distinctive tufted wrap garment—later called the kaunakes—became common in elite and ceremonial imagery. It could be worn by both men and women and varied by length, with longer versions often linked to higher status. This shift marks a move from earlier fitted looks toward heavier, textured wool garments.
The Standard of Ur shows clothing as a clear marker of social rank: the king is depicted larger and wears an elaborate garment, while soldiers and attendants appear in simpler fur or wool cloaks. The scenes connect dress to state power—warfare, victory, and public feasting—making clothing part of how authority was displayed. It is one of the best-known visual records of Sumerian dress conventions.
Finds associated with Queen Puabi show how elite appearance combined textiles with complex ornaments: gold leaves, lapis lazuli and carnelian beads, and garment pins used to fasten clothing. These objects suggest that formal dress was often built up in layers—cloth, pins, and extensive bead strands—creating a highly visible display of wealth and connections to long-distance trade.
A well-preserved temple statue of Ebih-Il from Mari depicts him wearing a kaunakes skirt with long wool tufts. The statue type served as a durable stand-in for continuous worship, so the clothing shown is likely a formal, meaningful choice rather than everyday wear. This helps link the kaunakes to religious settings as well as courtly status.
The Victory Stele of Naram-Sin presents the king as a dominant, almost divine figure through scale, posture, and royal regalia such as a horned helmet. While not a fashion “catalog,” the stele shows how official imagery used dress and equipment to communicate political ideology. Under the Akkadian Empire, appearance became tightly tied to messages of conquest and kingship.
Statues of Gudea depict him in a carefully draped robe that often covers one shoulder and can include fringe or border detailing. The repeated formal pose and consistent garment presentation suggest a deliberate “official look” for rulers tied to temple building and piety. This points to evolving elite styles beyond the earlier tufted kaunakes emphasis.
In the Third Dynasty of Ur, institutions managed large dependent workforces, including specialized weavers. People were often supported through ration systems that could include wool, showing textiles as both a product and a form of compensation. This level of organization helped standardize production and supported the steady supply needed for court, temple, and laboring populations.
The Code of Ur-Nammu, associated with the Ur III king Ur-Nammu, is one of the earliest surviving law codes. Even when specific clothing rules are not the main focus, law codes matter for dress history because they show expanding state regulation and clearer social categories (such as rank and property). These conditions shaped how garments were produced, owned, and displayed.
As Ur III weakened toward the end of the third millennium BCE, the administrative systems that tracked labor and rations—including wool—were still central to daily life. Clothing traditions built on wool production did not disappear; instead, they continued into later Mesopotamian cultures that inherited Sumerian and Akkadian practices. The period closes with textiles firmly established as a key economic and cultural resource.
