Height could indicate wealth because extreme platforms affected movement and often required assistance, while long skirts could conceal the shoe yet advertise luxurious fabric use. The shoe’s purpose therefore combined street practicality with social signaling.
Surviving late-1500s and around-1600 chopines show platforms tall enough to radically alter balance and gait. Museum and scholarly discussions note examples approaching two feet in height, underscoring how far the fashion could go. These objects help confirm that “extreme height” was not just exaggeration in written accounts or art.
A well-documented Italian pair of chopines dated around 1600 shows that the style persisted into the turn of the 17th century. However, footwear fashion increasingly moved toward other forms of elevation and structure, including developments that later emphasized heels rather than full platforms.
