A royal charter formally incorporated the fraternity of tailors and linen-armourers in the City of London, providing the legal framework for regulating the trade (including apprenticeship and standards) that later shaped London tailoring through the Tudor period.
The Company’s hall site by Threadneedle Street was in use by at least 1347, anchoring the craft’s institutional presence in the City of London and providing a long-term venue for governance, training oversight, and civic display.
After serious disputes over civic precedence, the Lord Mayor’s Billesdon Award required the Merchant Taylors and Skinners to alternate 6th and 7th positions in the livery company order of precedence—an important marker of status within the civic world that surrounded London’s elite fashion trades.

Elizabeth I issued a proclamation in 1574 reinforcing enforcement of apparel restrictions (sumptuary regulation). Such controls shaped what tailors could lawfully make for clients of different ranks, tying workshop practice to social hierarchy and state policy.
The Hall’s roof was rebuilt in 1586–1588. Investment in the hall fabric reflected the Company’s prosperity and its role as an institutional center for regulating craft practice and presenting collective prestige—key factors in the organization of London tailoring.
The Company received a new grant of arms (with additions including camels as supporters), replacing earlier heraldry. Livery company arms were used on buildings, plate, banners, and ceremonial clothing—visual identity closely tied to the public presentation of craft authority in Renaissance London.
On 1607-07-16 the Hall hosted a major banquet for King James I, with new furnishings and arrangements for royal viewing. Such events demonstrate how livery halls functioned as stages for elite display and civic-royal relationships—contexts in which fashionable dress and tailoring mattered intensely.
During the Great Fire of London (September 1666), the Hall’s roof and interior were gutted, leaving walls and foundations. The disaster disrupted many City institutions and trades, including the workshop and supply networks that supported clothing production and luxury retail.
The Rebuilding of London Act 1670 (royal assent 1670-04-11) set rules for rebuilding churches and public buildings after the Great Fire, part of the regulatory environment affecting the City’s physical infrastructure—where craft companies operated and where clothing trades re-established themselves.
