In the early 15th century the Valois dukes of Burgundy expanded their power in the Low Countries, creating a wealthy court culture in cities such as Bruges, Ghent, and Brussels where clothing, liveries, and ceremony became key tools of political display.
Philip the Good founded the Order of the Golden Fleece in Bruges to commemorate his marriage to Isabella of Portugal. The order’s chapters and insignia (including collars and ceremonial robes) reinforced a distinctive Burgundian visual identity at court.
Installed in Ghent in 1432, the Ghent Altarpiece became a landmark of Early Netherlandish art. Its panels are frequently used by historians as evidence for elite material culture—textiles, fur, jewelry, and contemporary styles—current in the Burgundian Netherlands.
Under Philip the Good, black became a politically legible court color in processions and diplomatic events; accounting evidence shows coordinated black-and-grey (and later predominantly black) outfits used to signal alliance and hierarchy in public spectacle.
At Lille, Philip the Good hosted the Feast of the Pheasant, a highly theatrical banquet promoting a crusade. Contemporary descriptions emphasize elaborate entertainment and costumed pageantry, reflecting how dress and spectacle operated as Burgundian court “soft power.”
After Philip the Good’s death, Charles the Bold assumed the duchy. His court became known for heightened ceremonial magnificence—precious textiles, jeweled hats, and formal robes—used to project ducal authority and quasi-royal ambition.
The 1468 marriage celebrations linked Burgundian and English dynastic prestige and were accompanied by conspicuous display. Accounts of Margaret’s entry and headwear (including a small coronet likely worn with a pointed hennin or over arranged hair) illustrate late Burgundian court fashion for high-ranking women.
Charles’s death ended the Valois-Burgundian male line and triggered political crisis in the Low Countries. The transition reshaped court patronage and the symbolic language of dress as Burgundian traditions passed into a Habsburg-led framework.
Under intense pressure from cities and provincial estates, Mary of Burgundy signed the Great Privilege, restoring local rights and limiting centralizing policies. The document is a key marker of how political authority in the Low Countries (and the court culture that staged it) had to negotiate urban power.
Philip (later known as Philip the Fair/Handsome) was born in Bruges and later became ruler of the Habsburg Netherlands. His upbringing helped carry Burgundian traditions of ceremonial display and elite fashion into a new dynastic context.
The 1496 marriage alliance tied the Low Countries’ court culture to Iberian dynastic politics. It helped set the stage for Burgundian-Habsburg fashions—dark luxury textiles, structured silhouettes, and conspicuous jewelry—circulating within a wider European network.
Charles was born in Ghent, anchoring the Habsburg dynasty’s public image in the Low Countries. Later Habsburg ceremonial culture in the Netherlands (including dress and public entries) drew on Burgundian precedents of conspicuous textile display and court ritual.
After Philip the Fair’s death, Maximilian appointed Margaret of Austria regent for the young Charles. Her court—centered at Mechelen—became a major hub of governance and high-status consumption, sustaining Burgundian-Habsburg ceremonial aesthetics into the early 16th century.
In 1515 Charles reached majority and assumed rule over the Netherlands (Burgundian inheritance). Court ceremonies marking his authority—such as joyous entries—continued the Burgundian tradition of using ritual and dress to communicate sovereignty in the Low Countries.
