Labels: Florentine ordinances, Women sFlorence had a long tradition of regulating luxury before 1425, including limits on women’s ornaments and clothing and rules for weddings, baptisms, and funerals. A surviving compilation in the Florentine state archives shows multiple ordinances from 1384 through 1467 gathered together, illustrating how often the city revisited the issue. This background helps explain why later fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century crackdowns could build on an established legal toolkit.
