Kevin Ma launched Hypebeast in 2005 as a personal blog centered on sneakers and streetwear. It helped readers track limited releases and fast-moving trends in one place, at a time when this information was scattered across forums and small sites. This set the editorial voice and audience base that later supported expansion into other culture categories.
In 2007, the operating company behind the site (then known as 101 Media Lab Limited) was incorporated in Hong Kong. Moving from a hobby site toward a formal business structure supported growth in staffing, advertising, and long-term publishing plans. This was an early step in turning Hypebeast into a scalable media brand.
In 2008, Hypebeast launched Popbee as a women-focused fashion and lifestyle platform. This expanded the group beyond its early sneaker and menswear emphasis and signaled a broader editorial strategy. Over time, it helped the company build a multi-site network with different audiences.
In June 2008, TIME included Hypebeast in its list of the “50 Best Websites” of 2008. The recognition signaled that streetwear-focused online editorial had moved closer to mainstream visibility. It also validated Hypebeast’s daily-update model as a destination for youth style news.
By 2010, Hypetrak was publishing music-focused editorial under the wider Hypebeast ecosystem. Building a separate music identity let the group cover hip-hop and related scenes that heavily influence streetwear style and marketing. This widened Hypebeast’s role from product-driven coverage to a broader youth-culture publication mix.
In 2012, Hypebeast launched HBX as its e-commerce platform, moving from reporting on products to selling them. This was a major business milestone because it connected editorial influence with direct retail operations. HBX also reflected a broader trend in digital media: using audience trust and data to power shopping decisions.
In June 2012, Hypebeast released the inaugural issue of Hypebeast Magazine. Print allowed longer interviews, deeper photo stories, and a slower format than web publishing. The magazine helped position Hypebeast as an editorial brand, not only a news feed for releases.
In 2015, Hypebeast established a New York office. Having a base in the U.S. supported closer relationships with American brands, designers, and events—key drivers of streetwear and sneaker culture. It also signaled a shift from Hong Kong-centered operations toward a more global publishing footprint.
In 2016, Hypebeast also established offices in London and Shanghai. These locations helped the company cover European and Mainland China fashion ecosystems more directly, including designers, retailers, and brand campaigns. Expanding regional reporting supported its goal of being a global streetwear and contemporary-culture platform.
On April 11, 2016, Hypebeast became a publicly listed company on Hong Kong’s Growth Enterprise Market (GEM). Going public raised capital and increased visibility, while adding new expectations around reporting and governance. For a streetwear-driven editorial brand, the listing marked a notable transition into a formal public company model.
In February 2017, Hypebeast launched Hypemaker, a creative studio offering services like campaign ideation and content production. This shifted part of the business from publishing about brands to producing work with brands. It also formalized a common media practice: turning editorial and audience insights into paid creative services.
On October 6–7, 2018, Hypebeast held the first Hypefest event in New York City. The festival translated online hype—drops, collaborations, and influencer-driven attention—into a physical space with brands, music, and experiences. It highlighted how digital streetwear communities could be activated offline as both culture and commerce.
On March 8, 2019, Hypebeast transferred its share listing from HKEX’s GEM board to the Main Board. The move aimed to improve trading liquidity and broaden investor recognition. It marked a later-stage milestone in the company’s evolution from niche editorial to diversified public business.
On May 4, 2020, HBX launched a Korean-language online store experience. The move reflected the growing importance of regional audiences and localized commerce features (like language support and tailored content). It also showed how Hypebeast’s platform strategy by 2020 combined editorial reach, community, and retail operations across markets.
