Nihon Doga Co., Ltd. was established in Tokyo, starting organized, professional animation production that would later become the basis for Toei Animation. This early company created a home for Japanese animators at a time when the industry was still small and fragmented.
Toei Co. purchased Nichido Film Co. and renamed it Toei Doga Co., bringing the animation unit into a larger film company with stronger financing and distribution. This corporate move set the stage for ambitious theatrical projects and long-term studio growth.
Toei Doga moved its production studio to Ohizumi in Nerima, Tokyo, creating a stable base for staff and facilities. The Ohizumi area would become closely associated with the studio’s identity and later expansion.
The studio completed its first short animation film, “Little Kitty’s Graffiti.” Early shorts helped the company refine workflows, train artists, and build experience needed for longer productions.
Toei Doga completed its first full-length theatrical animated feature, “The White Snake” (also known internationally as “The White Snake Enchantress”). The film marked a major step toward feature-length, full-color animation production in Japan and signaled Toei’s ambition to compete at an international level.
Toei began its first television animation series, “Ken, the Wild Boy” (also known as “Wolf Boy Ken”). Moving into weekly TV production pushed the studio to develop faster pipelines and a repeatable series-production model, which later became central to the anime industry.
Toei Animation produced the first “GeGeGe no Kitarō” TV anime, which began airing on Fuji TV. Long-running adaptations like this helped Toei build expertise in serialized storytelling and in turning popular manga themes into mass-audience television.
“Mazinger Z,” produced by Toei Animation, began broadcast in Japan and became a landmark “mecha” (giant robot) TV series. Its popularity strengthened Toei’s position in action-oriented television anime and influenced later robot and battle franchises.
Toei Animation premiered “Dragon Ball,” adapting Akira Toriyama’s manga for television. Its long run helped establish a global model for action-comedy shōnen anime (youth-oriented adventure series) and became a major international brand for the studio.
The company changed its name to Toei Animation Co., Ltd., aligning the Japanese corporate name with its widely used English branding. This reflected a studio that had grown beyond domestic theatrical work into television, licensing, and increasingly global distribution.
Toei Animation launched the “One Piece” TV anime on Fuji TV, adapting Eiichiro Oda’s manga into an ongoing weekly series. Over time, its scale and international reach made it one of the studio’s central pillars, shaping production planning, scheduling, and global licensing strategy.
Toei Animation became publicly listed on the JASDAQ Stock Exchange. Public listing increased access to capital and added new expectations for corporate governance, influencing how the studio planned and managed long-term production and licensing businesses.
Toei Animation publicly marked its 70th anniversary year, emphasizing its founding in 1956 and its long-running role in Japan’s animation industry. The anniversary framing underscored the studio’s shift from a domestic film unit into a global animation producer with strong licensing and content businesses.
