While studying at the Glasgow School of Art, Norman McLaren began experimenting with abstract, hand-made filmmaking. These early student works helped him develop an interest in animation as a personal art form, not just a storytelling tool. This starting point set the direction for his later “experimental animation,” where the technique itself becomes part of the message.
After McLaren’s amateur films drew attention in Scotland, documentary pioneer John Grierson offered him work at Britain’s GPO Film Unit. The move connected McLaren to professional film production and to a network that valued film as a public service. It also placed him in a workplace where experimentation could reach a wider audience.
McLaren created Love on the Wing for the GPO as a publicity film for the United Kingdom’s airmail service. He drew simple figures directly on film and layered them over backgrounds, producing a surreal, fast-transforming visual style. This film helped establish him as a bold animator who could blend commissioned work with artistic invention.
After moving to New York, McLaren intensified his experiments with “cameraless” filmmaking—making images by painting, scratching, or marking directly on film. This approach treated filmstrip as both canvas and instrument, reducing the need for traditional cameras and sets. It became a core method for his later work and influenced how animators thought about the medium.
McLaren made Boogie-Doodle in 1940 as a drawn-on-film “visual music” film, designed to match boogie-woogie piano. It showed how animation could function like choreography—timed precisely to sound rather than plot. The film is often cited as a key example of McLaren’s rhythm-focused approach to experimental animation.
John Grierson invited McLaren to work at the National Film Board of Canada (NFB), and McLaren moved to Canada in 1941. The NFB gave him stable resources and a public mission, which helped him keep experimenting while producing films for broad audiences. This move became the main institutional foundation for his career.
In 1942, McLaren established the NFB’s animation studio, building a production base for innovative short films. The studio supported experimentation with direct animation, stop motion, optical effects, and sound-image relationships. This institutional step mattered because it helped make experimental animation a recognized part of Canadian film culture.
With Hen Hop, McLaren used drawn-on-film methods (inking and scraping film stock) to create a dancing hen that gradually becomes more abstract. The short demonstrates his belief that animation could shift between recognizable figures and pure movement. It also showed how simple subjects could serve as a testing ground for new visual language.
McLaren and Evelyn Lambart created Begone Dull Care by painting and scratching directly onto the film to respond to jazz music by Oscar Peterson and collaborators. The short demonstrates how “visual music” can feel improvised—shapes, colors, and textures reacting like instruments in a band. It also highlights the importance of collaboration in McLaren’s studio practice.
McLaren’s Neighbours used pixilation (frame-by-frame filming of live actors, like stop motion) to tell a short anti-war story about two men fighting over a flower. The film became one of his best-known works because it combined technical innovation with a clear social message. It won the Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject), bringing major international attention to his approach.
McLaren’s Blinkity Blank used engraving and scratching on film to create images that appear and disappear, paired with improvised-feeling sound. The film won the Short Film Palme d’Or at Cannes, confirming that his highly experimental style could earn top international recognition. This success helped legitimize abstract and direct-on-film animation within major festival culture.
In Rythmetic, McLaren and Lambart used animated numbers and symbols to explore pattern, rhythm, and basic arithmetic without relying on spoken language. The film aimed for broad accessibility by using Arabic numerals as a shared visual “vocabulary.” It also continued McLaren’s interest in creating sound through film itself (including techniques linked to graphical sound).
McLaren co-directed A Chairy Tale with Claude Jutra, using pixilation and hidden manipulation to make a chair appear to resist being sat on. The film turned a simple situation into a study of movement, timing, and negotiation between human and object. It also showed how McLaren’s experimental methods could be comedic and widely appealing.
In Pas de deux, McLaren filmed ballet dancers against a black set and used optical printing to multiply and repeat their moving silhouettes. The result is both a dance film and a technical demonstration of how film processes can reshape time and motion. This work became a landmark example of McLaren’s later focus on performance, the body, and cinematic illusion.
With Synchromy, McLaren photographed graphic “sound cards” directly onto both the film image and the optical soundtrack. This created an unusually exact alignment between visible shapes and the sounds they produce. The film summarizes a long-running goal in his work: making sound-image relationships not just supportive, but structurally inseparable.
McLaren’s Ballet Adagio used slow motion to reveal balance and control within the adagio section of a classical pas de deux. The NFB described it as a revealing tool for many viewers and useful for dance students studying technique. This film shows McLaren applying experimental film methods to educational and performance-focused aims late in his career.
In Narcissus, McLaren visualized the myth of Narcissus through dance and experimental cinematic treatment rather than dialogue-driven storytelling. Produced at the NFB, it shows his continued interest in movement as meaning and in film effects that reshape performance. The film also demonstrates that his experimental approach remained active and ambitious into the 1980s.
Norman McLaren died on January 27, 1987, near Montreal. By that point, his career had helped make the NFB a major center for animation and expanded what animation could be—ranging from direct-on-film abstraction to pixilated live action and sound-image experiments. His films continued to be studied as examples of how technique, music, and motion can carry meaning without conventional dialogue or plot.
