The Annecy International Animation Film Festival was created in Annecy, France, as a dedicated event for animated film. Starting the festival established a recurring international meeting point for filmmakers, critics, and audiences focused specifically on animation.
After its early editions, the festival moved to an every-two-years rhythm for several decades. This biennial format shaped how films were selected and how professionals planned attendance, making each edition a larger checkpoint for the animation field.
Like many cultural events in France during May 1968, the Annecy festival was interrupted. The disruption showed how political and social events could directly affect film exhibition and international cultural exchange.
In the mid-1980s, Annecy expanded its awards structure, including recognition for feature-length animation. This helped position feature animation as a major part of the festival’s identity, not only short films.
The International Animation Film Market (Mifa) began in Annecy to support the business side of animation, including production and sales. Adding a market strengthened the festival’s role as both a cultural showcase and an industry meeting place.
After decades as a biennial festival, Annecy shifted to an annual schedule. This change increased the festival’s influence by making it a yearly hub where new animation work, trends, and deals could be presented and negotiated more regularly.
CITIA (Cité de l’image en mouvement d’Annecy) was created to structure the festival’s long-term development. With a dedicated public institution involved, the festival’s cultural programs, professional support, and training initiatives could grow more systematically.
At the end of the 2012 edition, Marcel Jean was appointed artistic delegate, taking over a key role shaping the official selection and programming. This leadership shift mattered because it influenced the festival’s curatorial direction and competitive structure in the following years.
Annecy added the Off-Limits short film section as part of a broader effort to diversify the kinds of work highlighted in competition. The new section created more space for unconventional styles and formats within the official selection.
Annecy expanded competition with additional short film sections, including Perspectives and Young Audiences. These categories helped the festival separate and better represent different creative goals, from emerging voices to films aimed at younger viewers.
Annecy created Contrechamp as a separate competitive section for feature films, alongside the main feature competition. The new category signaled a commitment to spotlighting more diverse approaches to feature animation, including films that push form and storytelling boundaries.
On April 7, 2020, organizers canceled the in-person 60th anniversary edition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The festival and Mifa continued as a digital edition in June 2020, showing how Annecy adapted to keep films and professional activity visible despite travel and gathering limits.
In 2021, Annecy held a June edition again after the fully online year. The return marked a transition back to physical screenings and face-to-face industry meetings, reinforcing Annecy’s role as a central annual gathering for animation.
In 2025, Annecy highlighted the 40th anniversary of Mifa, reflecting four decades of organized industry networking at the festival. By this point, the market had become a core part of Annecy’s identity, linking artistic premieres with financing, distribution, and professional development.
