In 1975, the Canadian Film Institute (CFI) helped establish a dedicated animation festival in Canada’s capital. Ottawa was selected partly because of its strong animation ties, including connections to the National Film Board of Canada and prominent animators living and working in the city.
In its early decades, the festival generally ran every two years (biennial), helping it build an identity while managing costs and logistics. This structure shaped programming and planning, with each edition aiming to gather a wide range of international animation work.
The first festival took place from August 10–15, 1976, launching what would become a major North American meeting point for animated film. Early on, the festival was organized by the CFI and positioned as an international event for artists, students, and audiences.
In 1984, the festival temporarily moved away from Ottawa, signaling a period of instability and experimentation with location. These changes affected how the event connected with local institutions and audiences.
After Toronto, the festival was held in Hamilton in 1986. The move reflected continued challenges in maintaining a consistent home base, even as the event’s international profile continued to grow.
By 1988, the festival returned to Ottawa, restoring a stable location and strengthening ties to the city’s cultural infrastructure. This return helped set the stage for growth in the 1990s, including larger audiences and broader industry attention.
In 1997, organizers launched the Ottawa International Student Animation Festival of Ottawa (often abbreviated SAFO) for years when the main event was not held. This helped spotlight student and emerging filmmakers and expanded the festival’s role as a training ground for new talent.
In 1999, a fire at the festival’s office in Ottawa’s Arts Court building destroyed or damaged many records from past editions. Despite the loss, the festival continued, showing organizational resilience and reinforcing the need for stronger continuity and systems.
In 2004, the festival added an industry-focused conference (now known as The Animation Conference, or TAC). TAC created a space for business meetings, panels, and pitching, complementing the festival’s public screenings with professional networking and deal-making.
In 2005, the event moved from a biennial rhythm to an annual festival, reflecting increased demand and capacity. As part of this change, student categories were brought into the main festival program rather than being separated into alternate-year events.
In 2016, the festival marked its 40th year with NightOwl, a large interactive late-night event combining animation screenings with hands-on activities (such as drawing and immersive media). It became a signature program that emphasized the festival’s mix of art, technology, and community participation.
In 2017, the festival broadened its public-facing programming by adding InGenius Jr Day for children and families and Animation Exposé, which offers behind-the-scenes talks and an exhibitor-style fair. These additions helped connect the festival to wider audiences beyond industry delegates and dedicated animation fans.
The CFI has announced the festival’s 50th anniversary edition for September 23–27, 2026, with TAC running concurrently on September 23–25. This milestone highlights the festival’s long-term impact as a major North American hub for animated film exhibition, professional development, and international exchange.
