The satirical short Interplanetary Revolution was produced in 1924 and is often cited as one of the first Soviet animated films. It reflects how early Soviet animation quickly took on political themes and experimented with film technique and storytelling.
In 1932, animator Mikhail Tsekhanovsky launched The Tale of the Priest and of His Workman Balda as an ambitious animated “opera” project. The film was never completed, and only a short fragment survives, but it shows how Soviet animators were already pushing toward feature-length, music-driven animation.
In 1935, Aleksandr Ptushko released The New Gulliver, a landmark film that used extensive puppet stop-motion for most of its runtime. Its success helped prove that long-form animation could work in Soviet cinema, not just short cartoons.
Soyuzmultfilm was established in Moscow on 1936-06-10 by merging existing animation groups into a single state-backed studio. Over time it became the central production base for Soviet animation, shaping training, styles, and the national canon.
During World War II, Soyuzmultfilm shifted toward propaganda work and faced major shortages. Part of the studio was evacuated to Samarkand in 1941 and returned to Moscow in 1943, showing how animation production continued despite severe disruption.
Soyuzmultfilm released The Snow Queen on 1957-11-01, marking a high point in postwar studio craft and feature production. The film later received international distribution and helped introduce Soviet animation to wider audiences outside the USSR.
In 1969, director Fyodor Khitruk released Winnie-the-Pooh at Soyuzmultfilm, beginning a trilogy with a distinct visual and comedic style. The film is widely remembered for its bold design choices and character-driven humor, showing a shift away from Disney-like realism toward a more graphic, modern approach.
Hedgehog in the Fog was released on 1975-10-23, directed by Yuri Norstein and produced at Soyuzmultfilm. Its layered imagery and careful atmosphere made it an influential example of Soviet “author animation,” where the director’s personal style drives the film.
Norstein’s Tale of Tales (1979) became one of the most celebrated Soviet animated films internationally. Its poetic structure and memory-based scenes helped define the reputation of late Soviet animation as a major art form, not only children’s entertainment.
After the Soviet Union dissolved in December 1991, the animation system built around state studios and centralized distribution weakened rapidly. Many artists and studios faced funding shortages and had to adapt to market conditions, setting the stage for new festivals and private producers.
The Open Russian Festival of Animated Films began in 1996, creating an annual space for professional screening, awards, and networking during a period of limited production. The festival later moved to Suzdal (starting in 2002), and it is often described as a key gathering point for modern Russian animation.
Melnitsa Animation Studio was formally established on 1999-03-26 in Saint Petersburg. It became a major post-Soviet production company, helping revive feature animation and series work through a more commercial studio model.
KikoRiki (also known as Smeshariki) premiered on 2003-12-22 and became a long-running Russian animated series. Its success demonstrated that domestically produced TV animation could again reach mass audiences in the post-Soviet media landscape.
Masha and the Bear first launched on 2009-01-07, produced by Animaccord. The series became a major export and an online phenomenon, showing how Russian animation in the 21st century could reach worldwide audiences through platforms like YouTube and international licensing.
