Susumu Hani’s Children Who Draw Pictures (1956), produced at Iwanami Productions, used close observation of children’s behavior and creativity rather than staged instruction. This approach helped shift Japanese documentary away from stiff “explainer” films toward more spontaneous, human-centered nonfiction. It also influenced younger filmmakers who would later build activist and independent documentary practices.
In 1956, Noriaki Tsuchimoto joined Iwanami Productions after political activism as a student. His move matters because it connected left-wing organizing energy with practical documentary production skills and networks. Tsuchimoto would later become a central figure in “committed” documentary—films made in solidarity with people in struggle.
Hani’s Bad Boys (1961) brought documentary techniques—location shooting and nonprofessional performers—into a feature film built around real social institutions. The hybrid style mattered for documentary culture because it widened the accepted tools for filming reality and behavior. It also helped connect documentary innovation to the emerging Japanese New Wave’s interest in contemporary social conflict.
The Art Theatre Guild (ATG) began in 1961 as a distributor for art and independent cinema, creating alternative routes to audiences outside the big studio system. This infrastructure later helped nonfiction and politically challenging work circulate through specialized theaters and cine-club networks. It became an important part of the broader ecosystem supporting independent Japanese filmmaking.
In 1965, Tsuchimoto proceeded with Exchange Student Chua Swee Lin after a TV network withdrew, raising support independently and siding with the subject. This became a model for documentaries that do not just “cover” a social issue but actively participate in it. The film signaled a shift toward small-scale, donation-based production aligned with political movements.
Report from Haneda (1967), directed by Shinsuke Ogawa, investigated a protester’s death during clashes at Haneda Airport and challenged the official police narrative using evidence and interviews. The film shows how documentary could function as public inquiry and political argument, not only observation. It also previewed the collective, on-the-ground methods that would define Ogawa Productions’ later work.

Tsuchimoto’s Prehistory of the Partisans (1969) observed radical students occupying Kyoto University, including debates over strategy and violence. The film illustrates a postwar documentary shift toward filming movements from within, capturing internal discussion as much as street clashes. It also links Tsuchimoto’s trajectory to the Ogawa network of activist documentary production.
In 1970, Ogawa Pro made Sanrizuka: The Three Day War, described as a rapid “bullet film” intended for quick circulation. The immediate style reflects a documentary function shaped by movement needs: speed, clarity of purpose, and distribution through activist channels. It also shows how the tradition balanced long-term immersion with quick-response reporting during escalations.
Minamata: The Victims and Their World (1971) documented people harmed by mercury pollution and centered victims’ lived experience rather than corporate or state explanations. The film’s importance is its sustained attention to community testimony and the ongoing nature of environmental harm. It launched Tsuchimoto’s long series on Minamata, making the disaster a central subject in postwar Japanese documentary.
Ogawa’s Narita, Peasants of the Second Fortress (1971) documented an intense phase of clashes between protesters and police during the airport conflict. The film shows how the struggle evolved into sustained confrontation, with tactics and morale changing under pressure. It is a key mid-point in the Sanrizuka/Narita documentary arc, capturing escalation and the costs of resistance.
Tsuchimoto’s Minamata Revolt: A People’s Quest for Life (1973) focused on victims’ organizing and direct confrontations with corporate representatives. The film marks a transition from documenting harm to documenting collective action—how people build leverage and demand accountability. It reinforced a core trait of the postwar tradition: documentary as a record of civic struggle over time.
With Sanrizuka: Heta Village (1973), Ogawa Productions moved away from frontline clashes to a close record of daily routines, customs, and local history. This shift matters because it treats what is being defended—land, labor, community—as documentary subject matter equal to protest action. The film helped define the tradition’s long-duration method: building meaning through extended attention rather than quick summaries.
In 1974, Ogawa and collaborators moved from Sanrizuka to Magino (Yamagata Prefecture), living and working in rice farming communities while making films. The relocation marked a clear transition: from documenting urgent protest to building long-term rural histories and social portraits. This shift closes the 1950–1980 arc by showing how postwar activist documentary methods evolved into extended community-based filmmaking.
Tsuchimoto’s The Shiranui Sea (1975) returned to Minamata to show how industrial poisoning reshaped daily life long after the initial crisis. By focusing on the continuing effects across families and work, the film emphasizes that environmental disasters are not single events but ongoing conditions. This long-view approach became a hallmark of Japanese postwar documentary practice in the 1970s.
