ARRI released the Arriflex 16ST, a professional 16mm camera with reflex viewing (seeing through the lens while filming). This improved handheld operation because the camera operator could frame more accurately while moving. Over time, reflex 16mm cameras became central to documentary and New Wave-style location production.
Stefan Kudelski’s Nagra III is widely credited with bringing pilot-tone synchronization into a portable recorder, helping sound stay in step with a camera running separately. This mattered for handheld filmmaking because crews could move quickly without a large studio sound setup. Better portable sound recording helped make street-level realism more achievable.
During August–September 1959, Jean-Luc Godard and cinematographer Raoul Coutard filmed Breathless largely with handheld camerawork and minimal lighting. The production relied on the Éclair Caméflex/Camerette, a compact camera favored for handheld use, even though it was too noisy for synchronized sound in many situations. The result helped define the French New Wave look of mobile framing and a documentary-like feel.
Breathless was released in 1960 and quickly became a key example of French New Wave cinema. Its visible mobility—handheld movement in real locations—showed audiences and filmmakers that a feature film could look immediate and improvised. This helped normalize lightweight, on-the-street shooting as an artistic choice rather than a technical limitation.
Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin’s 1961 documentary Chronicle of a Summer became closely associated with cinéma vérité, including filmmakers’ direct engagement with participants. The production used synchronized sound with a 16mm camera and a prototype Nagra III, supporting more natural conversations in real settings. This reinforced handheld, lightweight practices as part of a new documentary approach influencing multiple New Wave movements.
By the early 1960s, sync systems and speed-control methods continued to improve, including developments associated with Nagra’s Neopilot updates and broader industry adoption of more stable synchronization. More reliable speed matching lowered the risk that handheld, battery-powered cameras and separate audio recorders would drift out of sync. These improvements made lightweight, mobile shooting a more dependable workflow rather than a gamble.
On February 28, 1962, 26 young filmmakers issued the Oberhausen Manifesto at the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen. The manifesto argued for a “new” German cinema and is widely linked to the rise of New German Cinema. While not a camera-technology event itself, it helped set the cultural demand for flexible, low-budget production methods that handheld and lightweight equipment could support.
Éclair began manufacturing the 16mm Éclair NPR in 1963, designed to be portable and quiet enough for filming without a bulky sound blimp. This reduced camera noise helped crews record usable live sound more often while working handheld or on the shoulder. The NPR became an important tool for documentary practice and for fiction filmmakers adopting documentary methods.
ARRI released the Arriflex 16BL in 1965 as its first silent 16mm production camera. Being self-blimped (sound-dampened), it reduced the need for external housings that made handheld work heavier and less responsive. The 16BL helped expand sync-sound location filming in both documentaries and narrative work.
Through the late 1960s and early 1970s, New Wave and New Cinema movements increasingly treated handheld framing and small crews as a standard way to work on real locations. Lightweight cameras supported faster setups, more naturalistic performances, and filming in spaces where traditional equipment would draw attention. Across countries, these practices helped shift film style toward immediacy and everyday environments.
In 1975, ARRI introduced the Arriflex 16SR (Silent Reflex), described by the company as silent, ergonomic, and designed to rest on the shoulder with coaxial magazines. It combined portability with quieter operation and production-friendly features, reflecting years of demand for handheld sync-sound filmmaking. The 16SR’s release marks a clear endpoint for this 1958–1975 period: lightweight handheld practice had matured into mainstream camera design.
