Alain Resnais’s 1959 feature uses an innovative structure that mixes present action with memory through sharp transitions and layered montage. Its opening sequence interweaves intimate images with documentary and evocative footage, showing how editing could carry meaning—not just connect scenes smoothly.
Shown at Cannes in May 1959, Les Quatre Cents Coups helped make the New Wave a public event, not just a critical idea. Its modern feeling came from choices in shooting and rhythm, including an editing style that supported a subjective, youthful point of view rather than classical “invisible” continuity.
Jean-Luc Godard’s À bout de souffle (1960) became famous for its jump cuts—edits that remove small pieces of time within a continuous shot, creating a noticeable “skip.” By making the cut visible, the film treated editing as an expressive tool and helped normalize fragmentation and speed in narrative cinema.
Jacques Rivette began filming in 1958 but released Paris nous appartient in 1961, showing how New Wave projects could be made outside standard studio schedules. The film’s atmosphere and construction supported a modern, unsettled rhythm—one that encouraged editors to connect scenes through mood and association, not only plot logic.
Agnès Varda’s Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) is organized around a tight time window, creating a strong sense of minutes passing. Its editing balances longer observational stretches with inserts and transitions that shape how viewers experience time, attention, and the city as a changing montage of encounters.
In Vivre sa vie (1962), Godard breaks the story into twelve titled sections (“tableaux”), using intertitles to emphasize the film’s construction. This chapter-like editing encourages viewers to think about how scenes are arranged and how meaning can come from juxtaposition and separation, not just smooth continuity.
Chris Marker’s short La Jetée (1962) tells a science-fiction story almost entirely through still photographs, creating motion through editing and sound rather than moving images. The result is a radical form of montage experiment, showing how cutting and sequencing alone can create suspense, memory, and narrative time.
Made in 1960 but released in 1963, Le Petit soldat illustrates how politics and censorship shaped what New Wave filmmakers could show. Its delayed release also highlights that experimentation with form (including editing and scene construction) developed alongside, and sometimes in tension with, contemporary political conflicts.
Released in 1965, Pierrot le Fou brings together many New Wave editing tendencies—abrupt transitions, playful interruptions, and montage-like collage that mixes story with commentary. By this point, jump cuts and bold montage had moved from shocking novelty to a recognized style that influenced later filmmakers and music-video-era editing.
In Alphaville (1965), Godard combines science fiction and film noir while shooting in real Paris locations, relying on selection and cutting to make ordinary modern buildings feel futuristic. The film shows how montage can “relabel” spaces and genres by placing familiar images into new narrative and tonal contexts.
