Argento followed with The Cat o’ Nine Tails, released in Italy in February 1971. Lucio Fulci’s A Lizard in a Woman’s Skin opened in Rome in February 1971. Its psychedelic dream sequences and modern London setting showed how giallo could merge crime plots with experimental, mind-bending visuals. This approach broadened the genre beyond straightforward whodunits.
Argento’s Four Flies on Grey Velvet was released in Italy in December 1971. Like his earlier films, it uses subjective fear, misdirection, and striking set pieces to drive the mystery. Martino’s All the Colors of the Dark was released in Italy in February 1972. It mixes a giallo investigation with themes of trauma, manipulation, and occult-style group influence, reflecting the era’s interest in psychological and social breakdown. The film shows how giallo innovators experimented with hybrid subgenres to keep audiences engaged.
Massimo Dallamano’s What Have You Done to Solange? was released in March 1972. It helped popularize the “schoolgirls in peril” strain of giallo, connecting sexual scandal, institutions, and violence in a single mystery. The film’s success showed how giallo could focus on social settings and not only private apartments and art-world spaces.
Fulci’s Don’t Torture a Duckling was released in Rome in September 1972. Instead of a big city, it places the crimes in a small village shaped by superstition and suspicion, using the mystery to criticize social hypocrisy and power structures. This shift proved giallo could work as social commentary, not just stylish urban suspense.
