The show’s success reflected how, by 2016, the Serial-inspired audience for true crime was large enough to lift new independent productions.
American Public Media launched In the Dark, an investigative true-crime podcast built around document work, interviews, and accountability reporting. Its first season examined the Jacob Wetterling case and the effects of law enforcement decisions over many years. The show helped broaden the post-Serial boom by showing that true-crime podcasts could prioritize systems and evidence over cliffhangers.
Authorities arrested Ryan Duke and Bo Dukes in the Tara Grinstead case in February 2017, a major development after more than a decade without resolution. The case became a key example people cited when discussing whether true-crime podcasts could help generate useful leads and public pressure. It also raised debates about ethics, accuracy, and the responsibilities of podcast creators.
S-Town, made by producers associated with Serial and This American Life, released all seven chapters on the same day. The binge-release format showed how podcast storytelling was adapting to habits shaped by streaming TV, while still using investigative audio techniques.
