WeChat launched its Public Accounts platform (later commonly called Official Accounts) so individuals, media, and organizations could publish posts and push them to subscribers. This created an “app-within-an-app” distribution channel inside WeChat’s chat interface. It helped turn WeChat into an important gateway for news, marketing, and public services.
After rapid early growth, Tencent rebranded Weixin as WeChat for international audiences. This scale mattered because it attracted more publishers, developers, and businesses to build around WeChat’s features. Large network effects (more users bringing more services) helped drive further integration into daily life.
Tencent released WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay), adding a built-in wallet for transfers and purchases. Payments made WeChat more than a communications tool by linking messaging with money movement. This feature became a key building block for later e-commerce and “offline-to-online” services.
As WeChat Pay grew, QR codes became a practical tool for connecting offline stores with WeChat’s online accounts and payments. Scanning codes helped users follow brands and pay quickly without cash or cards. This reinforced WeChat’s role as infrastructure for everyday commerce, not just communication.
WeChat launched digital red envelopes (hongbao) for Chinese New Year, letting users send money gifts in chats and groups. The feature encouraged many users to link bank cards and try WeChat Pay for the first time. It also showed how cultural traditions could be redesigned as viral, platform-based interactions.
Tencent launched Enterprise WeChat (later known as WeChat Work, and then WeCom) to support workplace communication and management tools. The product was designed to separate work and personal life while still connecting businesses to WeChat’s consumer user base. This extended WeChat’s ecosystem beyond social life into organizational operations.
Tencent introduced Mini Programs, lightweight apps that run inside WeChat without a separate installation. This expanded WeChat from hosting content and payments to hosting full services like shopping, booking, and utilities. Mini Programs helped WeChat compete with standalone app ecosystems by keeping users inside one platform.
China’s Cybersecurity Law came into force, strengthening rules around network security and data practices. Major platforms like WeChat operated in an environment with stricter compliance expectations and government oversight. This legal framework shaped how platform expansion and content governance developed in later years.
China’s Data Security Law went into effect, adding a nationwide framework for how data is handled and protected. The law increased the compliance importance of data classification, security practices, and oversight for companies operating major platforms. For ecosystems like WeChat, it reinforced the policy context around platform integration and data-driven services.
China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) came into force, setting requirements for handling personal data. This mattered for super-apps because many services—messaging, payments, and Mini Programs—depend on personal information. The law marked a clearer end-state for 2010s-era rapid platform expansion: growth continued, but under tighter privacy and compliance rules.
WeChat announced that public-account posts would display location information for users in China, and overseas public-account users would display the country based on IP address. The change reflected stronger emphasis on identity and traceability in public publishing. It also illustrated how platform features were adjusted to align with China’s evolving internet governance environment.
