On August 13, 1965, Max Scherr published the first issue of the Berkeley Barb in Berkeley, California. The weekly paper quickly positioned itself as an alternative to mainstream local news, covering protest movements and countercultural life in a direct, partisan style. Its early success helped set a model for the underground press as both journalism and movement communication.
In 1966, several early underground papers—including the Berkeley Barb—helped found the Underground Press Syndicate (UPS). UPS members agreed to share and freely reprint one another’s content, which lowered costs and spread stories, cartoons, and political reporting across cities. This network structure helped the underground press grow faster than any single paper could on its own.
In March 1967, underground editors held an early national UPS meeting at Michael Bowen’s home near Stinson Beach, California. The gathering was symbolic but important: it showed that underground papers were becoming a recognized movement media ecosystem, not just isolated local experiments. For papers like the Berkeley Barb, these ties increased access to shared material and wider audiences.
In August 1967, Liberation News Service (LNS) began publishing and distributing news bulletins and photographs to underground and alternative newspapers. Often described as an “Associated Press” for movement media, LNS helped smaller papers cover national events they could not reach with their own reporters. The Berkeley Barb and peer papers relied on services like LNS to connect local activism to national and global issues.
On February 16, 1968, The New York Times reported on the growing “movement” center around LNS in Washington, D.C. The attention signaled that underground news distribution had become visible to mainstream institutions, even as it stayed outside traditional journalism norms. This visibility also foreshadowed increasing scrutiny and pressure on underground outlets.
On April 18, 1969, a notice in the Berkeley Barb called on people to transform a neglected university-owned lot into what became People’s Park. The episode demonstrated how underground papers could do more than report events—they could mobilize readers with specific actions. In Berkeley, the paper’s role tied local land-use conflict to broader arguments about democracy and community control.
On May 15, 1969, police cleared and fenced the People’s Park site, triggering mass protests and violent clashes in Berkeley. One bystander, James Rector, was shot and later died, and many others were injured. The crisis became a defining moment for Berkeley’s protest era, and underground coverage helped shape how supporters understood the conflict and the state’s response.
In July 1969, a major internal conflict led roughly 40 Berkeley Barb staff members to strike for several weeks. During the dispute they produced an interim issue titled Barb on Strike, then launched the competing underground weekly Berkeley Tribe. The split showed a recurring tension in the underground press: balancing anti-establishment ideals with the realities of ownership, pay, and editorial control.
By 1970, the Berkeley Barb reported a circulation around 85,000, reflecting how large some underground papers became at their height. High circulation helped the underground press compete for attention with mainstream local outlets, especially among youth audiences. It also increased financial dependence on advertising, including controversial classifieds, which later became a vulnerability.
In 1973, as the boom years of the underground press faded, the Underground Press Syndicate changed its name to the Alternative Press Syndicate (APS). The shift reflected a broader transition: many papers were trying to survive by becoming more stable “alternative” weeklies rather than short-lived insurgent publications. This moment marked a reorganization of the network that had helped early underground papers share content and identity.
By 1974, many U.S. underground newspapers had ceased publication, as the movement’s momentum and the economics of publication changed. Rising costs, internal splits, and the difficulty of sustaining volunteer-driven journalism contributed to the decline. In this environment, surviving papers faced pressure to professionalize or close, reshaping what “alternative press” meant for the next decade.
On July 3, 1980, the Berkeley Barb published its final issue and suspended publication “indefinitely,” with staff describing the end of a long-running underground institution. Contemporary reporting noted steep financial losses and a collapse from late-1960s influence to a much smaller circulation by 1980. The shutdown marked a clear endpoint for one of the movement’s best-known papers, and symbolized how the underground press era of 1965–1975 had largely given way to different forms of alternative media.
