Robert Sengstacke Abbott founded The Chicago Defender as a Black weekly newspaper in Chicago. It quickly developed a mission of fighting racial discrimination and reporting on violence and injustice ignored or minimized by much of the mainstream press. This foundation set up the paper’s later role as a national voice during the Great Migration.
By 1916, the paper’s circulation had grown to around 50,000, giving it influence far beyond Chicago. This larger readership mattered because the Defender’s stories and editorials could shape ideas about work, safety, and opportunity for Black Americans. The growth helped the paper become a key communications channel at the start of the Great Migration’s most intense years.
In an August 1916 editorial, Abbott argued that wartime labor demand created a rare opening for Black workers to move north for better jobs and safer lives. The Defender used plain, direct language to push readers to consider leaving the Jim Crow South. This kind of advocacy helped turn individual plans into a larger movement.
Abbott built an informal distribution system that relied heavily on Pullman porters and rail travel to move papers into southern communities. This mattered because many prospective migrants lived far from Chicago and depended on shared newspapers and public reading to get information. The system helped the Defender become a national voice even when southern authorities and customs discouraged its circulation.
The Defender promoted a coordinated migration push it called the “Great Northern Drive,” scheduled for May 15, 1917. Setting a date helped make migration feel organized and achievable, and it spread through letters, word of mouth, and the paper’s pages. The campaign shows how the Defender acted not just as an observer, but as an organizer using journalism.
By 1919, the Defender’s circulation rose to roughly 130,000, with a large share of subscribers in the South. The higher circulation both reflected and reinforced the Great Migration, as the paper promoted Chicago and other northern destinations while publishing job ads and success stories. In effect, the Defender functioned like a long-distance community bulletin for people planning life-changing moves.
Alongside calls to migrate, the Defender also printed practical guidance for people arriving in northern cities, including “do and don’t” advice about housing, work, and daily life. This approach recognized that leaving the South did not end racism, and that new arrivals faced unfamiliar rules and tensions in the North. The paper’s advocacy therefore included helping readers survive and adapt after relocation.
In 1919, racial violence erupted nationwide, including the Chicago race riot from July 27 to August 3. The Defender reported and argued from a Black perspective at a time when many white-owned newspapers framed events through stereotypes or ignored Black victims. This reporting strengthened the role of the Black press as a watchdog for civil rights during a high-risk period for migrants.
In 1920, the Defender began operating from a building at 3435 S. Indiana Avenue, remaining there until 1960. The location placed the paper within what became known as Chicago’s Black Metropolis (often called Bronzeville), a dense network of Black businesses, churches, and cultural organizations shaped in part by migration. The move signaled the Defender’s growing permanence and status in the community it served.
In 1929, Abbott helped launch the first Bud Billiken Parade and Picnic (held August 11, 1929), linked to the Defender’s youth outreach. The event connected journalism to civic life by celebrating Black youth and building community networks on Chicago’s South Side. It also reflected how Great Migration-era institutions created new public traditions in northern cities.
Robert S. Abbott died on February 29, 1940, after decades leading the Defender through the Great Migration years. His nephew, John H. Sengstacke—already being trained for leadership—became the successor and continued the paper’s civil-rights-focused agenda. The transition marked the end of the Defender’s founding era and the start of a new phase under a second generation.
From February 29 to March 2, 1940, Sengstacke organized a Chicago conference of Black newspaper publishers that founded the National Negro Publishers Association (later NNPA). This coordination strengthened the Black press as an industry and advocacy network at a moment when migration patterns and national politics were shifting toward World War II. As a closing outcome for 1910–1940, it shows the Defender’s Great Migration-era influence evolving into a broader, organized press movement.
