Nikkei Telecom started serving business users as a long-running database product line, later described as operating “since 1984.” During the bubble years, this kind of searchable archive supported faster, data-driven decision-making by firms, investors, and researchers following markets and policy shifts.
Nikkei’s group began systematic newspaper-article indexing for what became the Nikkei Telecom service. This strengthened Nikkei’s role not only as a newspaper publisher but also as a business-information provider, helping professionals search past coverage as markets accelerated.
Finance ministers and central bank officials from five major economies agreed to coordinate policies to weaken the U.S. dollar. The resulting yen appreciation reshaped Japan’s export outlook and pushed more attention onto domestic demand, credit conditions, and financial markets—key areas covered daily by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei).
As the yen strengthened after 1985, Japan’s central bank moved toward easier money, cutting its key discount rate through 1986–1987. Nikkei began supplying an “Industry/Technology Information Service” as part of the Nikkei Telecom package in July 1989. This expanded the database beyond markets and corporate finance into industry and science/technology information, reflecting growing demand for specialized business intelligence late in the boom.
On December 25, 1989, the Bank of Japan lifted its official discount rate to 4.25%, the third increase since May. Higher rates increased borrowing costs and contributed to a shift in market expectations, as the bubble began to lose momentum.
Japan’s Nikkei 225 stock average reached its peak close at 38,915.87 on December 29, 1989 (with an intraday high of 38,957.44). The record became a lasting symbol of the late-1980s boom and a reference point in Nikkei’s later reporting on the long downturn that followed.
By August 1990, Tokyo share prices had fallen sharply amid global uncertainty and expectations of further domestic tightening. A large single-day drop and a much lower index level illustrated how quickly sentiment had shifted from late-1989 optimism to concerns about rates, growth, and risk.
In August 1990, the Bank of Japan increased the official discount rate to 6%, a major tightening step in the effort to counter inflation and curb speculation. The move reinforced the shift away from the easy-money environment that had supported the bubble’s rise.
By July 1991, the Bank of Japan cut the official discount rate to 5.5%, signaling rising concern about slowing growth after the market decline. This pivot mattered for financial reporting because it highlighted the difficult balance between stabilizing prices and supporting the broader economy.
By late 1991 and into early 1992, Japan’s bubble was widely recognized as having burst, with falling land and stock prices feeding a wider economic slowdown. This period set the stage for years of weak growth and hard-to-resolve bad debts in banks—core themes for Nikkei’s business and policy coverage in the early 1990s.
In 1995, the failure of “Jusen” housing-loan companies became a public marker of how bubble-era lending had gone wrong. A policy response used public funds, but it proved unpopular and influenced how Japan discussed bank support and nonperforming loans in later years—issues Nikkei reported closely as both news and accountability journalism.
