Around 1455, Johannes Gutenberg finished the 42-line Bible in Mainz, Germany, using movable metal type and a press. It became a major proof that large, complex books could be produced in multiple nearly identical copies. This success helped launch the European market for printed books that later collectors called incunabula (early printed books).
On 1457-08-14, Johann Fust and Peter Schoeffer completed the Mainz Psalter, which included a dated colophon (a production note at the end of a book). Naming the makers and date made it easier to track editions and helped establish printing as a recognizable trade. The book also showed technical advances such as printed red and blue initials alongside black text.
In the mid-1460s, printers Konrad Sweynheim and Arnold Pannartz set up a press at Subiaco, marking an early start for printing in Italy. From there, printed Latin texts could reach scholars, clergy, and students more quickly than hand-copied manuscripts. This helped spread printing beyond the German-speaking lands into major Mediterranean book markets.
In 1465, the Subiaco press printed Cicero’s De Oratore, a key classical text for rhetoric and education. Printing such works supported the growing humanist demand for reliable texts used in schools and universities. It also shows how early printers built markets by producing established authors with predictable audiences.
In 1470, a printing operation backed by Sorbonne scholars began producing books in Paris, an important university center. By placing presses close to teaching and scholarship, printers could respond to demand for textbooks and learned works. This expansion strengthened a European distribution network for incunabula across borders and languages.
Around 1470–1471, Anton Koberger established a printing business in Nuremberg that grew into one of Europe’s largest. Large workshops could print many editions and help stabilize supply for international bookselling. This scale also supported ambitious projects that required major investment in paper, labor, and illustration.
In 1473–1474, William Caxton printed his English translation of Recuyell of the Historyes of Troye in Bruges. This was the first known book printed in the English language, showing that printing could serve readers outside Latin scholarly circles. It also pointed to a growing commercial market for vernacular (everyday language) literature.
In 1476, Caxton introduced a printing press to England, operating at Westminster. Having a local press reduced reliance on imported books and supported a steady supply of English-language texts. This widened the reach of printed genres such as religious works, practical guides, and literature.
In 1493, Hartmann Schedel’s Nuremberg Chronicle was published by Anton Koberger in Nuremberg. It combined large amounts of text with extensive woodcut images, showing how print could produce visually rich, information-heavy books for broad audiences. Projects like this helped make illustrated genres commercially important in late incunabula production.
In 1494, Aldus Manutius established the Aldine Press in Venice, a leading center of trade and printing. The press became known for scholarly editing and high-quality Greek and Latin texts aimed at humanists. Venice’s shipping links also helped these editions travel widely through European book markets.
In 1499, Aldus Manutius printed Hypnerotomachia Poliphili in Venice, a work famous for its careful layout and integrated woodcut illustrations. The book shows how late 15th-century printers competed not only on content but also on design and visual appeal. It became a landmark example of how incunabula could shape tastes in illustrated and literary genres.
By convention, incunabula are European books printed with movable type before 1501. Modern cataloging projects define and count this corpus to track how early printed books were produced, traded, and preserved. The shift into the 16th century marks printing’s move from an early experimental phase into a more established industry.
