Venice formally encouraged the new craft of printing by granting Johannes de Spira (Johann of Speyer) an exclusive five-year privilege to print in the city. Aldus Manutius popularized compact octavo-format editions—often described as portable ‘pocket’ classics—transforming how readers bought and used books. These smaller, more affordable volumes strengthened Venice’s export-oriented book trade.
The Aldine Press began prominently using its famous anchor-and-dolphin printer’s mark, a recognizable brand signal in a market increasingly affected by reprints and counterfeits. The device became one of the best-known emblems in the Venetian and European book trade.

Pope Paul IV promulgated the first official Roman Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Prohibited Books). The Index intensified pressures on printers, booksellers, and importers across Europe—including Venice—by expanding the risks around producing and trading suspect titles.
Paulus Manutius was invited to Rome by Pope Pius IV with a stipend to direct a major press producing papal decrees connected to the post–Council of Trent environment. His move signaled both the reach of Venetian-trained printers and the growing centrality of church-state regulation in mid-16th-century print culture.
