The Telegony, commonly associated with Eugammon of Cyrene, continued events after the Odyssey and ended the Trojan-cycle narrative arc with Odysseus’ death at the hands of Telegonus. It is generally placed in the 6th century BCE (often with a terminus ante quem around 570 BCE in modern scholarship).
In the mid-5th century BCE, Herodotus shows that Trojan-cycle poems such as the Cypria were known and discussed; he rejects Homeric authorship for the Cypria, indicating early critical engagement with cyclic epic attribution.
In the 4th century BCE, Aristotle contrasts the tighter construction of Homeric epic with cyclic poems’ more episodic structure, specifically criticizing the Cypria and Little Iliad for their “piecemeal” plots—evidence the Cycle’s narratives were widely familiar.
While knowledge of Trojan-cycle narratives is earlier, sources indicate that the Epic Cycle was not commonly treated as a named collective corpus until roughly the 2nd century CE, when the idea of a cycle “as a whole” is attested more explicitly.
A chrestomathy attributed to (Eutychius) Proclus, a 2nd-century CE grammarian, became a crucial vehicle for preserving summaries of the Trojan-cycle poems. These outlines later served as the main framework for reconstructing the Cycle’s lost narratives.
In his Bibliotheca, the 9th-century patriarch Photios reports on a work ascribed to Proclus’ Chrestomathy, including remarks on the Epic Cycle and traditions of attribution (e.g., competing claims about the Cypria). This testimony helped transmit knowledge of the Cycle’s structure and provenance debates.
The 10th-century manuscript known as Venetus A (Marcianus Graecus 454/822), famed for its Iliad scholia, also preserves the most important surviving summary of the early Greek Epic Cycle, making it central evidence for the contents of the lost Trojan-cycle poems.
