Scholars generally treat the Rāmāyaṇa as an oral epic before it became a stable written text. This long oral phase helps explain why later manuscripts preserve significant variation across regions and recensions.
The core poem is commonly placed around the middle of the 1st millennium BCE, with many estimates clustering near the 5th century BCE. The epic’s language and style are major reasons scholars use for this approximate dating.
As the poem spread, it was increasingly written down and recopied, but oral performance remained important. This mixed transmission (spoken and written) encouraged additions, omissions, and rearrangements over time.
The Rāmāyaṇa is organized into seven books (kāṇḍas) totaling about 24,000 verses in its common transmitted form. This structure helped later communities teach, copy, and adapt the work in more consistent units.
Most modern overviews describe the text as developing through redaction—later editing and expansion of earlier material—over centuries. This stage is often described as extending into the early centuries CE, shaping what later readers recognize as “the” Valmiki Rāmāyaṇa.
Classical Tamil literature preserves early echoes of the Rama story, including an allusion to Sita dropping her jewels during her abduction. Such references indicate the story’s broad cultural reach beyond Sanskrit literary circles.
Many scholars argue that the first and especially the last book (Uttarakāṇḍa) include later material compared with the epic’s core narrative. This view matters for “early redactions” because it suggests the poem’s ending and framing were still being shaped after earlier layers were already established.
Over time, copyists and performers in different regions preserved somewhat different versions of the epic. These differences became important evidence for modern textual scholars trying to distinguish older layers from later additions.
Although the epic is much older, the earliest surviving manuscripts are far later than its likely composition period. This gap means scholars must reconstruct early forms by comparing many later copies rather than relying on a single ancient manuscript.
In the 20th century, scholars at the Oriental Institute (Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda) began producing a “critical edition,” a reconstructed text created by systematically comparing manuscripts. This method aims to approximate an earlier form of the epic while documenting variants.
The project issued early installments as individual volumes and fascicles, including the first volume on the Bālakāṇḍa. Publication of these volumes marked a shift from relying on any single regional manuscript to using a documented, comparative scholarly text.
The Oriental Institute’s seven-volume critical edition was published across multiple decades and completed in 1975. This completion provided a stable scholarly baseline for studying early layers and later accretions in the Sanskrit Rāmāyaṇa.
The epic’s influence is not limited to texts: it has long been performed in living traditions. UNESCO’s recognition of Ramlila (dramatic performances based on the Rama story) highlights the epic’s enduring cultural legacy beyond ancient composition and early redactions.
