In 1759, Charles III became king and supported a reform-minded style of government often linked to Enlightenment ideals. His reign encouraged new institutions, education projects, and print culture that helped writers and critics argue for “useful” literature—works meant to improve society as well as entertain.
In March 1766, protests in Madrid (the Esquilache Riots) erupted over clothing rules and broader hardship, including food prices. The unrest showed how quickly reform measures could trigger backlash, shaping how Enlightenment projects—including cultural ones—were explained and defended to the public.
In 1775, the Real Sociedad Económica Matritense de Amigos del País was created under royal support in Madrid. These “Economic Societies” promoted practical learning and reform debates, building networks where essays, reports, and literary works could circulate as tools for improvement.
In 1778, Vicente García de la Huerta’s tragedy Raquel achieved major attention in Madrid. It helped consolidate Spanish neoclassical drama, which favored clear structure and moral purpose, and it strengthened calls for a more “regulated” theater aligned with Enlightenment taste.
In 1780, Tomás de Iriarte published La música, a long poem meant to teach as well as please. This kind of didactic writing fit Enlightenment goals: literature was expected to be clear, rational, and socially useful, not only decorative.
Between 1781 and 1784, Félix María de Samaniego published Fábulas, originally written for students. The fables offered short moral lessons in a simple style, reflecting Enlightenment hopes that reading could shape behavior and support social reform.
In 1782, Iriarte released Fábulas literarias, fables that often target poor artistic habits and empty showmanship. They helped spread neoclassical criticism by teaching readers to value clarity, balance, and strong craft over confusing plots or flashy effects.
In 1789, José Cadalso’s Cartas marruecas appeared posthumously. Using fictional letters from a Moroccan observer, the work compares Spain with other societies and critiques customs and institutions—an Enlightenment method that uses “outside eyes” to encourage self-examination.
In late 1789 and early 1790, Cadalso’s Noches lúgubres was published in installments in the Correo de Madrid. Its darker tone and intense emotion did not replace Enlightenment ideals, but it showed how Spanish literature was beginning to open space for new moods alongside rational critique.
On 7 February 1792, Leandro Fernández de Moratín premiered La comedia nueva o El café in Madrid. The play mocks fashionable, sensational drama and argues for more disciplined theater, a core Enlightenment goal: art should be believable, instructive, and socially responsible.
In 1795, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos’s Informe sobre la ley agraria was published after years of drafting and review. Although it is an economic-policy text, it matters for literature because it represents a major Enlightenment genre: clear, evidence-based prose written to persuade institutions and guide reform.
On 24 January 1806, Moratín’s El sí de las niñas premiered in Madrid. The comedy criticizes coerced marriage and highlights education and consent, showing how Enlightenment literature often used everyday family conflicts to argue for broader social change.
On 17 March 1808, the Revolt of Aranjuez forced the abdication of Charles IV in favor of Ferdinand VII. The crisis weakened state authority that had supported Enlightenment institutions, creating uncertainty for writers, theaters, and censorship systems tied to the monarchy.
On 2 May 1808, Madrid rose against French occupation, and the revolt quickly spread. Days later (5–7 May), the Bayonne abdications forced Spain’s kings to renounce the throne in Napoleon’s favor, helping trigger the Peninsular War and marking a clear break from the relatively stable conditions that had supported Spanish Enlightenment literary culture.
