Vǫlsunga saga, a leading fornaldarsaga (“saga of antiquity”), is dated roughly to around 1270. By rendering heroic Eddic material into prose narrative, it helped solidify the legendary-saga mode and preserved content related to otherwise-lost poetic traditions.
The Codex Regius manuscript—dated to about 1270—preserves the most famous collection of Poetic Edda poems, which served as a major reservoir for legendary narrative matter. Its survival is pivotal for understanding saga-era mythic and heroic storytelling in Iceland.
Njáls saga—among the most influential Icelandic family sagas—is generally dated to the late 13th century (commonly placed within 1270–1290). Its legal drama, feud narratives, and moral inquiry became central touchstones for the genre’s literary prestige.
The multi-text compilation known as Sturlunga saga is assembled around 1300, bringing together major samtíðarsögur (“contemporary sagas”) about Iceland’s 12th–13th century conflicts. It demonstrates how saga writing extended beyond family and legendary narratives into near-contemporary political historiography.
Grettis saga is widely considered a relatively late Íslendingasaga, thought to have been composed in the 14th century. Its outlaw narrative showcases the genre’s continued vitality and adaptability after the classic 13th-century flowering.
The manuscript compilation Möðruvallabók (mid-14th century) preserves an exceptionally large collection of Icelanders’ sagas, including Njáls saga, Egils saga, and Laxdæla saga. It is one of the most important witnesses to saga texts and their medieval anthology context.
