Around 1200, an anonymous poet in the Danube-region court culture reworked older Germanic heroic legends into a Middle High German epic now known as the Nibelungenlied. The poem blends older themes of honor and vengeance with newer courtly values and courtly settings, helping heroic material survive in a changing literary world.
By the early 1200s, the Nibelungenlied was being copied into manuscripts, marking its shift from performance and oral circulation into durable written transmission. One widely cited benchmark is an earliest extant manuscript dating to about 1220, showing the poem was already important enough to preserve in book form.
In the 1200s, the poem survives in three main manuscript versions—A (Munich), B (St. Gall), and C (Donaueschingen/Karlsruhe)—which preserve different readings of the text. Modern scholars often treat manuscript B as especially reliable, and comparing these versions became central to later editing and scholarship.
A separate concluding poem, the Nibelungenklage (“Lament”), was transmitted with the Nibelungenlied in most manuscripts and appears as an appended ending. Its presence shows that medieval audiences wanted closure and interpretation after the epic’s mass death scene, even when that closure was provided by a different author and style.
By the 1200s, heroic poetry did not remain fixed: new works mixed characters and story-worlds from different traditions. The Rosengarten zu Worms (a 13th-century heroic poem) combines figures linked to the Nibelungenlied with the Dietrich von Bern tradition, illustrating how the Germanic heroic cycle expanded through recombination.
Roughly three dozen manuscripts survive, suggesting the Nibelungenlied reached a broad medieval audience and circulated widely in German-speaking areas. This popularity helped keep Nibelung material alive long enough to shape later heroic poems and, eventually, early modern print traditions.
In 1479, printers issued the first Heldenbuch (“book of heroes”), an early printed collection that helped move medieval heroic material into the new world of print. Although the Heldenbücher often emphasized Dietrich-cycle and related legends, the genre created a commercial pathway for heroic narratives associated with the Nibelung tradition.
From 1504 to 1516, the Ambraser Heldenbuch was produced on commission for Emperor Maximilian I, written by Hans Ried in Bolzano. It preserves many heroic and courtly texts, including the Nibelungenlied, showing that elite patrons still valued medieval German epics even as Renaissance tastes and printing expanded.
The heroic ballad Das Lied vom Hürnen Seyfrid survives in print and reflects late medieval/early modern interest in Siegfried stories beyond the Nibelungenlied. Its earliest known printed edition is from 1530, and later editions continued for centuries, indicating that popular print favored shorter, more adaptable heroic narratives.
During the 1500s, printed Heldenbücher were repeatedly issued (for example in Augsburg, Hagenau, and Frankfurt), keeping heroic epics in circulation as reading practices and book markets changed. This print pipeline helped extend the afterlife of German heroic material even as Middle High German literature became less central to mainstream taste.
On June 29, 1755, Jacob Hermann Obereit rediscovered the Nibelungenlied manuscript known as C in the library at Hohenems Palace. This find mattered because it helped restart scholarly and public interest after a long period when the poem was far less read and studied.
In 1757, Johann Jakob Bodmer publicized the rediscovery by publishing excerpts and producing his own reworkings of the material. This early publication helped reintroduce the Nibelungenlied to a modern reading public, even though 18th-century editors sometimes reshaped the medieval poem to fit contemporary ideas about “classical” epic.
After manuscript C was found, researchers located additional major witnesses to the text, including manuscript B (in 1769) and manuscript A (in 1779 at Hohenems). With multiple versions available, editors could compare readings and start building more critical (evidence-based) editions of the epic.
In 1782, Christoph Heinrich Myller published a full edition of the Nibelungenlied, moving beyond partial excerpts toward complete access for readers and scholars. This step helped make the epic a stable object of study and translation, accelerating its long-term impact on German literary history and national cultural debates.
