The interconnected prose tales known as the Four Branches of the Mabinogi are generally thought to have been composed in the 11th–12th centuries, prior to their survival in later manuscript copies. This early composition period underpins later Welsh manuscript transmission of Arthurian-adjacent and native narrative material.
Peniarth 6 (now at the National Library of Wales) was copied in the 13th century (often dated c. 1225–1275) and preserves early fragmentary witnesses to parts of the Four Branches, providing the earliest surviving manuscript evidence for this prose cycle.
The Black Book of Carmarthen (NLW Peniarth MS 1), compiled in the early-to-mid 13th century, is a landmark early Welsh manuscript. While primarily poetic, its preservation of early Welsh literary culture forms part of the broader manuscript environment from which later prose compilations (including Arthurian materials) emerged.
Work on the Hendregadredd Manuscript (NLW MS 6680B) began after 1282, probably at Strata Florida Abbey. Although chiefly an anthology of court poetry (Gogynfeirdd), it is crucial for understanding the institutional and scribal context in which major Welsh literary texts—including prose tales circulating alongside Arthurian material—were copied and curated.
The White Book of Rhydderch (NLW Peniarth MSS 4–5) was copied in the mid-14th century (c. 1350), probably for Rhydderch ab Ieuan Llwyd, likely involving scribes working at/near Strata Florida. It is the earliest major compendium of Welsh prose and contains key witnesses to tales later grouped under The Mabinogion, including Welsh Arthurian romances such as Owain, Peredur, and Geraint and Enid.
In its surviving form, Peniarth MS 4 of the White Book preserves the earliest manuscript compilation of multiple Middle Welsh prose tales now commonly associated with The Mabinogion (including the Four Branches and several Arthurian-linked narratives). This consolidation is a pivotal moment in the transmission history of Welsh prose collections.
The Red Book of Hergest (Jesus College, Oxford, MS 111) was copied beginning after 1382 (often dated c. 1382–c. 1400, with work continuing into the early 15th century). It became a principal manuscript source for the Welsh prose tales later popularized as The Mabinogion, including Arthurian romances and other narrative materials.
The National Library of Wales notes that, unlike the White Book, the Red Book of Hergest includes The Dream of Rhonabwy. This difference between the two great prose compilations is important for tracing which Arthurian and pseudo-historical narratives were transmitted together, and where specific texts survive.
In 1573, Richard Langford of Trefalun made a copy of the White Book of Rhydderch before further losses occurred in the original. Although Langford’s copy is itself lost, later transcripts descended from it, extending the early modern transmission chain for White Book material.
By the early 17th century, antiquary John Jones of Gellilyfdy was producing influential transcripts (including Peniarth 111, dated 1607, noted as descending from the Langford line). Such copying helped preserve access to White Book texts as the original manuscript suffered loss and rebinding changes.
After John Jones’s death (mid-17th century), the White Book was acquired by Robert Vaughan and incorporated into the Hengwrt library, a major early modern repository for Welsh manuscripts. This custodial shift was significant for the manuscript’s survival and later scholarly access.
The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales began publication in 1801 (with additional volume(s) appearing later), printing large quantities of medieval Welsh texts and shaping 19th-century access to Welsh literary tradition. Although it is not a direct edition of the Mabinogion manuscripts, it marks a key transition from manuscript culture to print-mediated transmission for Welsh medieval literature.
The three-volume publishing project of the Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales concluded with the appearance of its third volume in 1807. The collection remained influential for decades as a convenient printed source for many medieval Welsh texts in scholarly and literary circles.
Lady Charlotte Guest launched the first major modern printed translation commonly titled The Mabinogion with the publication of an initial installment in 1838. Her project drew on manuscript-derived Welsh texts (notably via access to the Red Book tradition) and was decisive in popularizing Welsh Arthurian tales in the English-speaking world.
Guest’s bilingual Welsh/English presentation of the tales appeared across seven parts between 1838 and 1845, helping establish a widely read Victorian-era conduit for medieval Welsh narrative—especially the Welsh Arthurian romances (Owain, Peredur, Geraint and Enid) transmitted in the medieval manuscript tradition.
