In 1929, Joyce’s circle produced Our Exagmination Round His Factification for Incamination of Work in Progress, a collection of essays and letters responding to confusion and criticism. It also documents collaboration between Joyce and sympathetic writers during the long composition period.
Also in 1929, the Black Sun Press published Tales Told of Shem and Shaun, a separate booklet of Work in Progress material. Such limited editions helped Joyce circulate substantial sections outside magazines and reinforced that fragments could function as stand-alone texts. The episode is an example of how publishers and patrons supported Joyce during the long, uncertain writing process.
In 1930, Joyce published the episode Haveth Childers Everywhere as a limited edition “Fragment from Work in progress.” This booklet shows the project’s scale: by this point Joyce was releasing sizable, coherent sections while the overall book remained unfinished. It also highlights the careful production and international publishing arrangements used for modernist small-run texts.
After years of serving as a key outlet for Joyce’s fragments, transition ultimately ended its original run in Spring 1938. The magazine’s lifespan matters because it helped shape the book’s public reception and provided a continuing space for revised installments. Its closure signaled that the long serialization phase was reaching its end as Joyce moved toward final publication.
In 1938, the art-and-literature review Verve published Joyce’s “A Phoenix Park Nocturne,” presented as an extract from the still-unfinished book. Coming shortly before the final release, this served as one of the last prominent periodical appearances of Work in Progress material. It shows how Joyce’s fragments moved across different modernist networks, from little magazines to high-profile art reviews.
By 1939, Joyce had finished the long drafting and rewriting process that began in 1923. Over these years, the work’s language and structure were repeatedly reshaped through revisions prompted by serial publication and private editing. Completion set the stage for the long-kept title to be revealed at the moment of publication.
On 1939-05-04, the complete book was published in London by Faber and Faber and in New York by Viking Press. Joyce revealed the final title Finnegans Wake only with this full publication, after years of using “Work in Progress” for fragments. The event marks the transformation from an evolving public draft culture into a fixed book, even though readers recognized many sections from earlier installments.
By the end of 1939, Finnegans Wake stood as a completed novel whose public identity had been shaped by its long serial publication and the collaborations around it (editors, supporters, specialist presses, and critics). The book’s publication closed a 1923–1939 arc: from private drafts, to public fragments under a working label, to a final, titled volume. That process became part of its reception history, influencing how later readers and scholars approached its difficulty and its many earlier versions.
