In Munich, the new literary magazine Hyperion printed eight short prose pieces by Franz Kafka under the general heading Betrachtung (“Contemplation”). This was his first major step from private writing in Prague into public modernist print culture. The publication also connected him to a wider network of editors and readers beyond Bohemia.
Kafka started keeping diary notebooks (often mixing daily notes with story drafts and fragments) during this period. The diaries became a working space where he tested ideas, scenes, and styles that fed into later stories. This practice shows how closely his “Prague life” and his literary experiments were intertwined.
On the night of 1912-09-22, Kafka drafted “Das Urteil” (“The Judgment”) in a single burst of writing. He later treated the story as a personal artistic breakthrough, and it became central to how friends such as Max Brod understood his talent. The father–son conflict and sudden, absolute “sentence” foreshadowed themes that would define his modernist reputation.
Kafka’s first book, Betrachtung (Contemplation), was printed at the end of 1912 by Rowohlt (associated with Kurt Wolff’s initiative). The collection gathered short pieces written over several years, including some that had already appeared in Hyperion. Moving from magazine items to a bound book helped establish Kafka as a serious modernist author rather than only a contributor to periodicals.
Kafka published “Der Heizer” (“The Stoker”) as a separate pamphlet in 1913, even though he had written it as the opening chapter of an unfinished novel later known as Amerika. The episode shows a pattern that would recur: Kafka could bring striking sections to completion while larger novel projects remained fragmentary. The story’s central image—an execution machine that inscribes the law onto the body—pushed his exploration of authority, punishment, and obedience into a sharper, more brutal form. It also illustrates how his Prague-based writing often returned to major themes over long periods before reaching print.
Kafka’s novella “Die Verwandlung” (The Metamorphosis) first appeared in October 1915 in the journal Die weißen Blätter, edited by René Schickele. Its publication marked a major moment in Kafka’s lifetime output: a longer, fully realized narrative reaching a broader modernist audience. The story’s plain reporting of an impossible event became one of the most influential techniques associated with Kafka’s style.
On 1917-08-13, Kafka woke up spitting blood—an early sign of what was diagnosed a few weeks later as pulmonary tuberculosis. The illness reshaped his ability to work, limiting travel and contributing to long gaps in new writing. This turning point helps explain why many major texts moved slowly from drafts toward publication and why friends later played such a large role in preserving his manuscripts.
Kurt Wolff published Kafka’s second story collection, Ein Landarzt (A Country Doctor), in 1919 (often listed with 1920 in bibliographic records). The book gathered many pieces written during wartime years and presented them as a coherent body of modernist short fiction. Bringing these texts together in book form helped stabilize Kafka’s public literary profile despite his ongoing health problems.
After revising the story in 1918, Kafka saw “In der Strafkolonie” reach print in October 1919 through Kurt Wolff Verlag. Publication transformed a disturbing wartime-era manuscript into a public statement on law, violence, and moral certainty. It also demonstrated Kafka’s continued effort to place major works despite slow editorial processes and his declining health.
In November 1919, Kafka drafted the long “Letter to His Father” addressed to Hermann Kafka, but it was never delivered. The document lays out Kafka’s view of a lifelong fear and conflict with paternal authority—an issue that also runs through many stories. Although it remained private at the time, it later became a key source for interpreting the emotional pressures behind his Prague writings.
Kafka’s story “Ein Hungerkünstler” (“A Hunger Artist”) was first published in 1922 in Die neue Rundschau. The piece focuses on a performer whose art becomes less valued by the public, sharpening Kafka’s late-career interest in the relationship between artist and audience. Its publication showed that even with long periods of limited productivity, Kafka could still produce new major work for leading journals.
Kafka assembled Ein Hungerkünstler (A Hunger Artist), a collection of four stories, as his last book project and was able to correct proofs during his final illness. The volume was published in 1924 by Verlag Die Schmiede, several months after his death. This created a clear “closing chapter” to his lifetime publishing efforts: a final, author-shaped selection even as larger novels remained unpublished.
Kafka died on 1924-06-03 in Kierling, near Vienna, after his laryngeal tuberculosis worsened. He left instructions asking Max Brod to burn unpublished manuscripts, diaries, and letters, but Brod refused and instead organized their publication. This decision set the stage for Kafka’s posthumous transformation from a respected but limited-circulation writer into a central figure of modernist literature.
On 1925-04-26, Der Process (The Trial) was published in Berlin by Verlag Die Schmiede, edited and arranged posthumously by Max Brod. The release brought a major unfinished Prague-era novel project into public view and quickly became one of Kafka’s defining works. Its success confirmed that Brod’s choice to preserve and publish the manuscripts would permanently shape Kafka’s literary legacy.
