After the war, Joyce returned to Trieste in October 1919 and worked on major sections of Ulysses, including "Nausicaa" and "Oxen of the Sun" (and beginning "Circe"). This period shows how the novel’s most controversial material took shape alongside its bold experiments in style.
In April 1920, The Little Review printed the "Nausicaa" episode, which became the focus of an obscenity complaint by the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice. In 1921, Shakespeare and Company circulated a prospectus (an advance announcement) for a private, limited edition of Ulysses for subscribers. The announcement emphasized that the novel had been suppressed during serialization and would be issued "complete as written" in 1,000 copies. This step turned Beach’s support into a concrete publication plan, even before the final text was fully ready.
In February 1921, the editors Margaret Anderson and Jane Heap were tried and convicted for publishing "Nausicaa" in The Little Review. They were fined and effectively forced to stop publishing Ulysses. The verdict made clear that U.S. legal barriers were not just theoretical—they were already shaping what could be printed and distributed.
By late October 1921, Joyce completed the last major writing needed to finish Ulysses (including the last-written episode, "Ithaca"). Even after this milestone, Joyce continued revising and checking details. The completion mattered because it triggered the intense final stage: correcting and re-correcting proofs for a complex, error-prone first printing.
In the months leading up to publication, Joyce kept revising the text while printer’s proofs were being prepared, continuing work into January 1922. This proof stage was unusually difficult because Joyce was still changing sentences, facts, and references as pages went to press. The result was a famously complicated first edition, produced under deadline pressure.
On February 2, 1922—Joyce’s 40th birthday—Ulysses was first published in Paris by Sylvia Beach’s Shakespeare and Company in a limited edition of 1,000 numbered copies. Publishing in France helped bypass English-language censorship and distribution barriers.
