T. S. Eliot began drafting what became “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock,” a dramatic monologue that uses a speaker’s inner thoughts to show modern anxiety and self-doubt. These early poems set the tone for Eliot’s modernist style: everyday city life mixed with sharp allusion (references to earlier literature) and unexpected jumps in voice.
“The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” was first professionally published in the June 1915 issue of Poetry (Chicago). The publication helped introduce Eliot to a wide audience and signaled a shift toward modernist poetry that favored fragmented thought and a more conversational, urban voice.
Eliot’s “Portrait of a Lady” was first published in September 1915 in Others: A Magazine of the New Verse. Along with “Prufrock,” it strengthened Eliot’s reputation for poems that dissect social performance and emotional distance in modern life.

In 1920, Eliot published The Sacred Wood, a collection of essays that helped define how modernist criticism would talk about poetry and drama. The book’s arguments—about standards, form, and evaluation—added to Eliot’s authority as both a poet and a major critic.
Eliot’s poem “Gerontion” first appeared in 1920 in Ara Vos Prec (and in a nearly identical Poems volume in New York). The poem looks at postwar Europe through an elderly speaker and bridges Eliot’s early satiric voice and the broader cultural scope he would soon attempt in The Waste Land.
Eliot founded and edited The Criterion, whose first issue appeared in October 1922. That inaugural issue published The Waste Land, using the magazine as a platform to present a challenging modernist poem to an international literary audience.
In November 1922, The Waste Land appeared in the U.S. in The Dial, expanding Eliot’s reach across the Atlantic. The dual publication (UK and US) helped make the poem a central reference point for modernist literature and criticism in the 1920s.
Eliot’s collection Poems 1909–1925 was issued by Faber & Gwyer in 1925, bringing together key early poems and shaping how readers encountered his development up to and beyond The Waste Land. The volume also strengthened Faber’s role as a home for modernist writing associated with Eliot.
In April 1925, Eliot was appointed editor of a new quarterly journal at Faber & Gwyer and soon after became a director of the business. This career shift moved him from banking into publishing, giving him long-term influence through both his own writing and the authors he helped bring to print.
In 1925, Eliot published “The Hollow Men,” a poem of spiritual and cultural emptiness written in a fragmented modernist style. It extended themes from The Waste Land while pointing toward the religious concerns that would soon become more explicit in his later work.
In 1927, Eliot took British citizenship and converted to Anglicanism, changes that marked a major personal and artistic turning point. After this, his poetry more openly explored religious belief, discipline, and the possibility of renewal rather than only cultural breakdown.
While The Criterion began as a quarterly, it shifted to a monthly schedule during 1927–1928. The change shows how the magazine had become a sustained center for serious literary debate, extending Eliot’s influence as an editor as well as a poet.
In August 1927, Eliot published “Journey of the Magi” as part of Faber’s illustrated Ariel Poems series. Written in a dramatic monologue voice, it reflects a post-conversion perspective: the speaker remembers a life-changing event yet feels unsettled by what it means.
In 1930, Eliot published Ash-Wednesday, his first long poem after his 1927 conversion. Its style is more meditative and prayer-like than his earlier work, and it helped define a new phase of modernism in which spiritual struggle became a central subject.
The Criterion ceased publication in January 1939, ending a major platform through which Eliot shaped modernist literary standards and debates for more than 16 years. By this point, Eliot’s early poems and The Waste Land had become central texts, and his editorial work had helped define what “modernist literature” meant in practice.
