By 1592, Shakespeare is identifiable in London’s theatre world, with his early history plays already being performed and discussed by contemporaries. This marks the start of his public career as a working dramatist for the commercial stage, not just as a writer in private.
When plague outbreaks repeatedly closed London theatres in the early 1590s, playwrights lost income from performances. In this context, Shakespeare published the narrative poem Venus and Adonis (1593), using print as another way to build reputation and earnings while stages were disrupted.
In 1594, Shakespeare followed with The Rape of Lucrece, also in print and also dedicated to the Earl of Southampton. These publications helped confirm him as a serious literary writer at a time when theatre work could be uncertain.
When London theatres reopened in 1594 after plague closures, a strong Lord Chamberlain’s Men emerged. Shakespeare became a key member of this leading company, which would anchor his London career for the next two decades.
Shakespeare’s only son, Hamnet, was buried on 11 August 1596 at Holy Trinity Church in Stratford-upon-Avon. The record is significant because it shows Shakespeare maintaining family ties in Stratford while working in London, and it frames the personal background to his later writing years.
In spring 1597, Shakespeare purchased New Place, one of Stratford-upon-Avon’s largest houses. The purchase is strong evidence of growing wealth from his London theatre work and investments, and it set up Stratford as his long-term base even before he fully retired.
In 1599, Shakespeare’s company built and began using the Globe Theatre on the south bank of the Thames. Shakespeare was not only the main playwright but also a shareholder, tying his creative output directly to box-office success and the company’s business strategy.
On 7 February 1601, supporters of the Earl of Essex commissioned a performance of Shakespeare’s Richard II, a play that includes the deposition of a king. The episode shows how theatre could become politically sensitive in London and how Shakespeare’s company had to navigate government scrutiny.
After James I took the throne in 1603, the Lord Chamberlain’s Men received royal patronage and became the King’s Men by letters patent dated 19 May 1603. This change strengthened the company’s prestige and stability, shaping Shakespeare’s work in the Jacobean (James I) period.
Othello’s first known performance was at court on 1 November 1604 at Whitehall Palace, played by the King’s Men. Court performances mattered because they brought royal attention and could influence a company’s standing, even while public performances remained the main source of income.
A documented performance of King Lear took place at Whitehall on 26 December 1606. This anchors the play within Shakespeare’s intense mid-career phase, when the King’s Men were closely connected to the royal court while still serving London’s commercial audiences.
By 1608, the King’s Men established the Blackfriars Theatre as their indoor, winter playing space. Having both the Globe (outdoor) and Blackfriars (indoor) let the company reach different audiences and use different staging options, influencing how later plays were written and produced.
In 1609, Shake-speare’s Sonnets were published in a quarto edition, collecting 154 sonnets. Unlike most of his plays, which he mainly wrote for performance, the sonnets show his public identity in London as both dramatist and poet in print.
The first recorded performance of The Tempest occurred at court on 1 November 1611, according to the Revels Accounts. Because court was usually not the place for a risky first-ever staging, this suggests the play had likely already been tried with public audiences, reflecting the company’s mature production system.
On 29 June 1613, the Globe Theatre burned down during a performance of Henry VIII when a cannon effect set the thatched roof on fire. The loss forced the company to rely more on indoor performance space and rebuild, showing how physical theatre infrastructure could shape London’s play business.
By 1614, the Globe had been rebuilt on the same site after the fire. The rebuilding demonstrates the company’s financial strength and the continued demand for large-scale public theatre on the south bank of the Thames.
Shakespeare’s will is dated 25 March 1616, reflecting his settled property and family arrangements in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is a key end-of-career document, showing that his long London success had translated into substantial holdings to pass on.
Shakespeare died on 23 April 1616, marking the endpoint of his London career as an active playwright and shareholder in the King’s Men. After his death, his works continued through performance and print, but the period of new Shakespeare plays for the London stage effectively ended.
