Erasmus published a small collection of classical proverbs with short notes, drawn from Greek and Latin authors. It quickly became a showcase for humanist scholarship—using ancient texts to comment on morals, politics, and everyday life. This early success helped establish his reputation as a leading editor and Latin stylist.
Erasmus drafted what became the Enchiridion militis Christiani (“Handbook of a Christian Knight”), a guide to practical Christian living. It urged an inward, moral faith rather than a focus on outward rituals alone. The book became an early statement of Erasmus’ reform-minded “Christian humanism,” while still staying within the Catholic Church.
After his time in Italy, Erasmus greatly enlarged Adagia into a much bigger, more ambitious work with extended commentaries. These notes often turned a proverb into a short essay, connecting ancient learning to current public and ethical questions. The expansion strengthened his role as a major interpreter of classical culture for a Christian Europe.
While traveling and visiting friends, Erasmus composed the Latin satire later known as The Praise of Folly. The work uses humor to criticize learned pretension, superstition, and abuses in church and society, while still pointing toward moral reform. It became one of his most influential writings and helped spread humanist critique to a wide audience.
Erasmus’ satire was printed for the first time, making it easier to circulate across Europe through the fast-growing print trade. Print publication turned a private literary joke into a public commentary on religion and culture. The book’s popularity also increased expectations that Erasmus would address church reform in serious scholarly works.
Erasmus published De copia, a teaching text that trained students to write flexible, varied Latin by rewriting ideas in many ways. It became widely used in schools and helped shape Renaissance education and Latin composition. The book also supported Erasmus’ broader program: using language study to develop clear thinking and moral persuasion.
Erasmus wrote (and circulated anonymously) a sharp dialogue imagining Pope Julius II being refused entry to heaven. The work criticized warlike, power-focused leadership in the church, using classical-style satire to make a political and moral point. It shows how Erasmus’ Latin writing could challenge authority while trying to avoid open confrontation.
In Basel, printer Johann Froben started producing Erasmus’ Novum Instrumentum omne, the first published Greek New Testament. Erasmus paired a Greek text with a corrected Latin version and extensive notes, aiming to improve biblical study through philology (careful language scholarship). The project tied humanist methods directly to core Christian texts and intensified debates about authority and interpretation.
Erasmus published The Education of a Christian Prince, presenting ideals for moral, peace-focused government. Written for the young Charles (later Emperor Charles V), it argued that rulers should serve the common good and avoid wars of ambition. The book shows Erasmus using classical learning and Christian ethics together in a “mirror for princes” genre.
Erasmus’ first edition of the Greek-Latin New Testament appeared in print, along with his annotations. Because it was produced quickly, it contained many errors, and critics challenged several readings—but it still transformed New Testament study by making the Greek text widely available. Later editors and translators relied heavily on Erasmus’ work, even when they disagreed with his choices.
A short set of Latin conversation formulas linked to Erasmus circulated in print and became the seed of his later Colloquies. Over time, Erasmus expanded the work into dialogues that mixed language learning with social and religious critique. The Colloquies became a powerful, accessible way to spread humanist ideas beyond specialist scholars.
Erasmus released a revised second edition, now using the title Novum Testamentum omne. This edition helped standardize the book’s identity and continued the rapid spread of Greek New Testament printing. It also mattered for the Reformation era, because later reformers used Erasmus’ editions as a base text for vernacular translations.
In the third edition, Erasmus included the disputed “Johannine Comma” (a Trinitarian clause in 1 John 5:7–8) that he had omitted earlier because it lacked Greek manuscript support. The change became famous because it influenced later printed Greek texts and, through them, some later Bible translations. The episode shows the pressure that scholarship, controversy, and public expectations could place on a humanist editor.
Erasmus published On Free Will as a careful argument against Martin Luther’s strong claims about human inability to choose the good. He framed the work as a “discussion” rather than a personal attack, but it still marked a public break with the Lutheran movement. The controversy pushed Erasmus from biblical scholarship into major Reformation-era theological dispute.
After Luther’s harsh response, Erasmus published Hyperaspistes as an extended defense of his position on free will and his approach to scripture. The two-part publication shows how quickly printed controversy could escalate, with arguments timed around major book fairs and distribution networks. By this point, Erasmus’ role as a moderate reformer was increasingly hard to maintain amid polarized religious politics.
Erasmus issued his last revised New Testament edition in 1535, the final version produced during his lifetime. Later editors used Erasmus’ work as a foundation for influential printed Greek texts, shaping the tradition that became known as the Textus Receptus. This closing milestone shows the long afterlife of his editorial choices in both scholarship and church history.
