After the Diet of Worms, Martin Luther was hidden at Wartburg Castle for safety. During this period he began translating the New Testament into German from the original-language sources available to him, aiming to make Scripture readable to ordinary laypeople. This set a model for using print to spread a vernacular Bible quickly and widely.
Luther’s German New Testament first appeared in print in Wittenberg in September 1522, often called the “September Testament.” It showed how translation, editing, and printing could be coordinated to reach a mass readership. The edition helped push the Reformation’s message by putting a widely read German Bible into the book market.
A second, corrected 1522 edition of Luther’s German New Testament (often called the “December Testament”) followed the first printing within months. Rapid revision was a normal part of early modern printing, especially for texts expected to be read closely and debated. The quick turnaround also reflects high demand and intense competition in the Bible book trade.
Luther and collaborators expanded beyond the New Testament by publishing the Pentateuch (Genesis through Deuteronomy) in German in 1523. This helped normalize the idea that the whole Bible—not only selected readings—should be available in the spoken language of worshippers. It also created new work for printers, illustrators, and booksellers tied to reform networks.
In 1524 William Tyndale left England to pursue an English New Testament translation and printing project on the Continent, where sympathetic patrons and printers were easier to find. English church authorities treated unauthorized vernacular Bible work as dangerous and potentially heretical. Tyndale’s move connected English reformers to German and Low Countries printing networks.
In 1526 Tyndale’s complete English New Testament was printed at Worms by the printer Peter Schöffer the Younger. The small, portable format supported concealment and smuggling, allowing copies to reach readers in England despite official opposition. This edition became foundational for later English Bibles and helped shape modern English biblical vocabulary.
Later in 1526, English officials moved to suppress Tyndale’s New Testament by buying up and burning copies in a public demonstration. These actions show the stakes of vernacular printing: authorities feared that printed English Scripture could spread reform ideas quickly. Suppression also created an incentive for new printings and revised editions outside England.
In 1529 a complete German Protestant Bible was produced in Worms by combining parts of Luther’s work with material associated with the Zurich tradition. This shows how printers sometimes assembled “complete” Bibles from the best available translations to meet demand, even while translation projects were still underway. It also highlights the competitive race among reformers, translators, and printers.
In 1530 Tyndale published the Pentateuch in English while working in the printing world of Antwerp. It was a major step toward a full English Bible and extended vernacular translation into the Old Testament. This also shows how translation, printing, and exile were closely linked for Protestant Bible makers.
By 1530, Zurich printer Christoph Froschauer issued the entire German Bible in a portable octavo format, reflecting a push toward affordability and personal reading. Zurich’s Bible work drew partly on Luther’s translation while also developing independent scholarship in places. This edition shows that vernacular Bible printing was not one single project, but a network of related efforts across cities.
In 1534 Luther’s full German Bible (Old and New Testaments, including the Apocrypha) was printed in Wittenberg by Hans Lufft. This was a major turning point: the Bible now circulated as a single, standardized printed book in German, supported by professional illustration and book production. It helped stabilize both Protestant teaching and a widely understood written German style.
In November 1534 Tyndale published a carefully corrected and compared English New Testament in Antwerp, responding to errors and unwanted changes in earlier printings. The revision demonstrates how translators tried to control accuracy even when printing happened through complex cross-border networks. It also strengthened the text base that later English Bibles would reuse.
Myles Coverdale’s Bible (1535) was the first complete printed Bible in English. It drew on Tyndale where available and filled gaps using Latin and German sources, showing how translation often meant careful compilation as well as new rendering. Completing the work depended on Continental printing capacity and financing linked to Antwerp’s book trade.
In 1537 the “Matthew Bible” was published under the name “Thomas Matthew,” a pseudonym linked to John Rogers. It combined Tyndale’s translations with Coverdale’s work to create a more complete English Bible suitable for wider use. The project shows how editors and printers used compilation and naming strategies to navigate politics while pushing vernacular Scripture forward.
In 1539 the Great Bible was issued as the first English Bible authorized by Henry VIII for public church use. Printing began in Paris but was interrupted, and the work was completed in London—showing how political risk could shape where and how Bibles were manufactured. This marked a decisive shift from clandestine vernacular editions toward official, parish-based access to an English Bible.
A completely revised edition of Luther’s German Bible appeared in 1541, reflecting ongoing correction and refinement after years of use. The revision shows that vernacular Bible printing was not a one-time breakthrough but a continuing editorial process. By this point, Protestant Bible editions had established durable models for translation, printing, and mass distribution in northern Europe.
