In May 1521, Íñigo López de Loyola (later Ignatius) was seriously wounded during the siege of Pamplona. During a long recovery, he read devotional works and began redirecting his ambitions from soldiering to a life of Christian service. This personal turning point set the stage for later writings and reforms associated with the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
In 1522 Ignatius began a pilgrimage that included Montserrat, where tradition holds he left behind his weapons and took up a pilgrim’s way of life. The act symbolized a public, practical break from his former identity as a courtly soldier. This shift toward penitence and prayer became a core theme in later Ignatian spirituality.
After Montserrat, Ignatius stayed in Manresa for about eleven months, spending extended time in prayer, reflection, and austerity. His experiences there were later organized into methods for meditation and decision-making (often called “discernment”), which became the heart of the Spiritual Exercises. Manresa is widely treated as the formative spiritual laboratory of Ignatius’s later work.
In 1523 Ignatius traveled to Jerusalem as a pilgrim, but his plans did not develop into a permanent mission there. After returning, he concluded that serious study was necessary if he wanted to help others effectively in a time of religious conflict and reform. This decision led him toward the educational path that would later characterize the Jesuit mission.
In 1528 Ignatius went to the University of Paris, then a major European center for theology and philosophy. Over time he attracted companions who were drawn to his spiritual guidance and commitment to mission. These relationships mattered because the Spiritual Exercises were not just a text—they were also a guided practice taught person-to-person.
On August 15, 1534, Ignatius and six companions took vows at Montmartre in Paris, committing to poverty and chastity and planning a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. They also pledged to place themselves at the pope’s disposal if travel proved impossible. This moment is commonly treated as the “seed” of the Society of Jesus: a spiritual bond organized around mission.
In 1537 Ignatius was ordained a priest in Venice. Priesthood mattered for his reform-era project because it gave him an official sacramental and preaching role within the Catholic Church. It also positioned the group to pursue their proposed missions under church authority rather than as informal lay preachers.
In 1537, while traveling toward Rome with companions, Ignatius reported a mystical experience at La Storta that he understood as confirmation of their future work. The episode became part of Jesuit memory as a moment when the group’s direction shifted decisively toward service under papal authority. In the Counter-Reformation context, this helped frame their mission as inside the institutional Church, not outside it.
Ignatius celebrated his first Mass on December 25, 1538, at Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. This event is often noted because it shows his cautious, deliberate approach to priestly ministry, shaped by long preparation and discernment. It also places him firmly in Rome as the group moved from student companions to an organized religious project.
On September 27, 1540, Pope Paul III issued the bull Regimini militantis Ecclesiae, giving the first formal papal approval to the Society of Jesus. This was a major institutional turning point: the companions became a recognized Catholic religious order at a moment of intense Protestant–Catholic conflict. Approval enabled wider recruitment and stable governance for work in education, preaching, and missions.
In April 1541, the Jesuits elected Ignatius as their first Superior General (the order’s top leader). This role mattered because it centralized leadership and helped the group coordinate missions across different regions. Under Ignatius, the Society strengthened its internal discipline and refined how the Spiritual Exercises would be used in guiding individuals and training members.
In 1548 the Spiritual Exercises were formally approved by Pope Paul III, and a first printed edition appeared in Latin. Papal approval helped protect the text’s use during an era when new devotional methods could be viewed with suspicion. Print publication also helped the Exercises spread beyond Ignatius’s personal circle, making them a durable tool of Catholic renewal and Jesuit formation.
On July 21, 1550, Pope Julius III issued Exposcit debitum, a renewed and expanded papal approval of the Jesuit order. Building on experience since 1540, it clarified aspects of the Society’s aims and structure as Jesuit activity grew in education and international missions. This reinforced the Jesuits’ place as a key Counter-Reformation institution with direct papal support.
Ignatius died in Rome on July 31, 1556, ending the founding generation’s direct leadership. By then, the Society of Jesus was established with a tested leadership structure and a widely used spiritual program in the Spiritual Exercises. His death marks a clear transition from foundation to long-term expansion, as Jesuits continued shaping Catholic education, missions, and reform efforts for centuries.
