Martin Luther wrote the Ninety-five Theses to invite debate about indulgences (payments or actions said to reduce punishment for sin). The theses quickly spread through printing, turning a university dispute into a wider public controversy. This moment is often treated as the opening of the Reformation-era writing campaign that followed.
Luther defended a set of theological theses at an Augustinian meeting in Heidelberg. The event helped other scholars and future reformers hear and discuss his approach to salvation and Christian life. It shows how Luther’s message moved beyond Wittenberg through public academic argument.
Pope Leo X issued the bull Exsurge Domine, listing alleged doctrinal errors and ordering Luther to recant within a set period. The bull marked a shift from argument to formal discipline by church authorities. It pushed the conflict into a point where compromise became harder.
Luther wrote a major German-language appeal urging secular rulers and nobles to take part in church reform. Publishing in the vernacular broadened his audience far beyond clergy and university readers. The tract helped connect religious criticism to political action and public debate.
In On the Babylonian Captivity of the Church, Luther attacked parts of the Catholic sacramental system and argued that church practices had strayed from Scripture. The book helped clarify that his dispute was not only about indulgences. It also increased pressure on church leaders to respond more forcefully.
In On the Freedom of a Christian, Luther argued that salvation is received by faith and that Christian service flows from that gift rather than earning it. The work became a clear and readable summary of his central theological message. It strengthened the literary and devotional side of the reform movement.
After receiving Exsurge Domine, Luther burned it and other church law texts in a public act of rejection. This was a highly visible statement that he no longer accepted the pope’s authority over his teaching. The conflict moved from debate to open rupture.
Pope Leo X issued Decet Romanum Pontificem, formally excommunicating Luther. This ended any realistic path for Luther’s reform to remain inside official Catholic structures. From this point, Luther’s writings increasingly supported a separate evangelical church life in parts of Germany.
At the Diet of Worms, Luther was questioned before Emperor Charles V and pressed to withdraw his writings. He refused unless convinced by Scripture or clear reasoning, appealing to conscience bound to God’s word. The hearing made his texts a major imperial issue, not just a church dispute.
After the Diet of Worms, the Edict of Worms declared Luther an outlaw and banned his writings. In practice it was unevenly enforced, but it raised the legal stakes for printers, readers, and supporters. The ban also encouraged Luther’s allies to protect him and keep his publishing work alive.
Luther’s German translation of the New Testament was printed in September 1522 after being drafted during his stay at Wartburg Castle and revised with colleagues. It made Scripture accessible to many lay readers and helped unify religious vocabulary in German. Demand was high enough that another edition followed quickly the same year.
In 1529 Luther published the Small and Large Catechisms to address widespread gaps in basic Christian teaching among clergy and laity. The Small Catechism was designed for families and children, while the Large Catechism helped pastors teach core beliefs. These texts became long-lasting tools for shaping Lutheran worship, education, and identity.
Lutheran princes and cities presented the Augsburg Confession at the Diet of Augsburg as an official statement of their beliefs, largely drafted by Philipp Melanchthon. Because Luther was an outlaw, he could not attend, but the confession summarized ideas his writings had helped establish. This step turned reform writing into a formal, public confession tied to political authorities.
In 1534 a complete German Bible translation associated with Luther’s project was printed, bringing together the earlier New Testament and translated Old Testament books. The publication strengthened the Reformation’s emphasis on Scripture in the language of ordinary worshipers. It also reinforced a more standardized written German through wide circulation in print.
Luther wrote the Smalcald Articles in 1537 as a strong summary of key Lutheran teachings for a meeting of the Schmalkaldic League. Even though the league did not formally adopt the text at that meeting, it showed how Luther’s writings had moved from protest to systematized doctrine. Later generations treated the Articles as an important confessional statement.
A major revised Bible edition associated with Luther’s final oversight was printed in 1545 in Wittenberg. It represents a late stage of refinement after decades of translating, editing, and reissuing Scripture in German. This edition highlights how Bible translation stayed central to Luther’s literary legacy up to the end of his life.
Luther died in Eisleben after a final trip connected to resolving a regional dispute. By his death, his writing and translation work had helped create lasting Lutheran institutions and a major body of German religious literature. His publications continued to shape both Protestant identity and Catholic responses in the Counter-Reformation era.
