Lope de Vega remarried in 1598, a period when he was already a dominant figure in Spain’s commercial theatre. This matters for the 1598–1635 scope because his household, patronage, and later life crises overlapped with his most influential years of playwriting and publication.
A Zaragoza volume titled Las comedias del famoso poeta Lope de Vega Carpio helped establish the “Parte” format: printed collections that usually grouped twelve plays. This model became a major way Lope’s theatre circulated in print, including many editions that were not authorized by Lope.
Lope’s verse treatise Arte nuevo de hacer comedias en este tiempo was first published in 1609 in the fifth edition of his Rimas. It became the best-known statement of his dramatic principles, explaining how he wrote for popular audiences while adapting (and breaking) classical rules.
Scholarly accounts describe the Arte nuevo as most likely first presented as a speech to a Madrid literary society (the “Madrid Academy”) shortly before it appeared in print in 1609. This performance-like context helps explain the text’s practical tone: it argues through example, wit, and direct address rather than abstract theory.
In 1610 Lope moved his household definitively from Toledo to Madrid, the center of Spanish court culture and the busiest theatrical market. The move placed him closer to printers, patrons, and performance networks that shaped how his plays were staged and circulated.
Lope completed the comedy La dama boba on 1613-04-28, a date preserved in a manuscript written in his own hand. This kind of evidence anchors the timeline in concrete writing practice, not just later publication dates, and shows how quickly Lope produced stage-ready works.
After major personal losses (including the death of his second wife in 1613), Lope experienced a religious crisis and became a priest. This did not end his literary output, but it marks a turning point that influenced how he publicly managed reputation, morality themes, and patronage while continuing to write for the stage.
Peribáñez y el Comendador de Ocaña was first published in 1614 (in Lope’s Cuarta Parte). The play is a key example of Lope’s “comedia” blending: it mixes social conflict and honor themes with stage-driven plotting aimed at broad audiences.

El perro del hortelano (The Dog in the Manger) was first published in 1618 in the Oncena parte of Lope’s comedias. The play’s proverb-based title points to one of Lope’s strengths: using widely understood sayings and social situations to build sophisticated comic intrigue.
Lope’s Fuenteovejuna was first published in Madrid in 1619 as part of Docena Parte de las Comedias (Parte 12). Based on a 1476 historical incident, the play shows how Lope used national history and collective action to create drama that could speak to power, justice, and community.
By 1625, Lope’s personally supervised run of “Partes” reached Parte XX, after which the Council of Castile stopped granting licenses to print comedias for a time. This policy shift affected how new plays moved from stage to page, reinforcing theatre as the primary medium even for famous authors.
In 1632 Lope published La Dorotea, which he called an “acción en prosa” (an action in prose): a fully dialogued prose work shaped by dramatic technique. Coming late in his career, it shows how his dramatic habits—scene-building, voice, and conflict—could be redirected into a hybrid prose form.
Lope’s tragedy El castigo sin venganza was first produced in May 1632, after being written in 1631. Often treated as one of his major late achievements, it shows how his “new art” could also support a darker, tightly focused tragic plot about honor and political concealment.

Lope de Vega died in Madrid on 1635-08-27, closing the most prolific career of Spain’s Golden Age theatre. By the end of his life, his “new art” had helped define the dominant model of the Spanish comedia, influencing playwrights, performers, and readers for generations.
