In September 1937, publisher Street & Smith appointed John W. Campbell Jr. as editor of Astounding. Over the next months he began shifting the magazine toward tighter writing and more scientifically grounded stories, setting the stage for a major change in U.S. science fiction publishing.
From the January 1938 issue onward, Campbell exercised direct editorial control rather than simply finishing previously planned material. This mattered because it marked the point when the magazine’s contents increasingly reflected his editorial priorities, including more consistent standards for plot logic and technical detail.
With the March 1938 issue, the magazine’s title changed to Astounding Science-Fiction. The new name signaled a stronger focus on science fiction as a distinct genre, and it aligned the magazine’s identity with Campbell’s push for more “serious” speculative storytelling.
The July 1939 issue is widely treated as a turning point in Campbell’s era, featuring A. E. van Vogt’s "Black Destroyer" and Isaac Asimov’s "Trends." The following issues soon introduced key debut stories by Robert A. Heinlein and Theodore Sturgeon, helping establish a core group of writers identified with the magazine’s peak influence.
Beginning with the November 1943 issue, Astounding became the first science fiction magazine to move to the smaller “digest” size. This change mattered because it reflected evolving magazine economics and reading habits during World War II, while keeping the magazine visible on newsstands in a changing print market.
Cleve Cartmill’s story "Deadline" appeared in the March 1944 issue and described an atomic bomb with unsettling detail for its time. Because nuclear weapons work was still secret, the story helped trigger government attention (including an FBI visit), highlighting how closely Campbell-era science fiction sometimes tracked real scientific discussion.
With the November 1946 issue, the magazine’s title dropped the hyphen and became Astounding Science Fiction. While minor on the surface, the change reflects how the publication’s branding stabilized after the war, even as science fiction itself was becoming more mainstream and more competitive.
In the May 1950 issue, Astounding ran L. Ron Hubbard’s article outlining Dianetics, shortly before the book version was published. Campbell’s willingness to feature Dianetics shows how the magazine mixed fiction with claims about the mind and science—choices that drew attention but also strained relationships with some writers and readers.
Tom Godwin’s "The Cold Equations" was published in the August 1954 issue. Its hard-edged problem-solving plot became a famous example of “hard SF,” where story outcomes follow strict physical limits, and it became a frequent reference point in debates about realism versus compassion in science fiction.
From December 1957 to June 1958, Campbell narrated the radio anthology Exploring Tomorrow. The program adapted science fiction stories for broadcast, extending Campbell’s influence beyond print and showing how magazine-era science fiction was spreading into other mass media formats.
Starting with the February 1960 issue, Campbell began a gradual rebranding from Astounding to Analog Science Fact & Fiction, with both names overlapping on covers during the transition. The new title emphasized the magazine’s identity as a place for fiction informed by science and for science articles aimed at general readers.
By October 1960, the cover transition was complete and the magazine was titled Analog Science Fact & Fiction without Astounding. This was a symbolic endpoint for the pulp-era branding and a clear sign that Campbell’s magazine was adapting to a changing market and audience expectations in the 1960s.
John W. Campbell Jr. died on July 11, 1971, ending a decades-long editorship that had shaped the “Golden Age” reputation of Astounding/Analog. His death created an immediate transition challenge: how to keep the magazine’s identity while responding to newer styles of science fiction developing by the early 1970s.
The January 1972 issue was the first to credit Ben Bova on the masthead as editor, marking the start of the post-Campbell era. This change is often treated as the “aftermath” turning point: the magazine continued its science-forward identity, but under new leadership that could recalibrate editorial taste for a different decade.
