Lully directed the premiere of his Te Deum (LWV 55) at Fontainebleau for the baptism of his son (with Louis XIV as godfather). The work became a major emblem of grand official sacred music at court.
Lully’s Psyché (newly shaped as a tragédie lyrique with a libretto by Thomas Corneille) premiered at the Académie royale de musique, showing Lully’s move from court-centered hybrid spectacles toward the mature operatic form he controlled.
In 1681 Lully received letters of nobility (and related court status), underscoring how thoroughly Louis XIV’s cultural system could elevate artists who served royal representation effectively.
Armide premiered at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal. Often regarded as Lully’s masterpiece, it exemplified the mature tragédie en musique—French text declamation, dance integration, and allegorical prologues aligned with court culture.
At a festive performance connected with the Te Deum, Lully struck his foot while beating time with a staff, leading to an infected wound and gangrene—an incident central to his death later in 1687.
Lully died in Paris from gangrene following the conducting injury. His death ended an era in which one musician, backed by royal privilege and court institutions, had largely defined the dominant forms of French court opera and ceremonial music.
