Sweelinck’s Amsterdam studio attracts German pupils
Labels: Jan Sweelinck, Amsterdam StudioAround the turn of the 1600s, Amsterdam organist Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck became a major teacher for visiting musicians from northern Germany. His students carried his keyboard techniques—especially variation writing and contrapuntal (interwoven-line) skill—back to cities such as Hamburg and Lübeck. This teacher-student network helped set the foundation for what later scholars call the North German Organ School.
