Salomon’s first major Haydn concert in London premiered Haydn’s Symphony No. 96 at the Hanover Square Rooms. This concert is often treated as a turning point: it showed that a subscription series could market a composer as the main attraction and draw large, fashionable crowds. Haydn’s success also encouraged more ambitious programming and higher performance expectations.
A major fire destroyed the Pantheon building, which had hosted fashionable events including subscription entertainments. The Professional Concerts ran through the 1780s and ended in the early 1790s, marking the end of one influential performer-led subscription experiment. By this point, promoter-driven series like Salomon’s were becoming the main engines for large-scale symphonic premieres. The shift helped set up the mid-1790s London scene in which Haydn’s late symphonies were premiered as headline attractions.
During Haydn’s second London visit, Symphony No. 99 premiered at the Hanover Square Rooms in a Salomon-organized concert. These later seasons show London’s subscription system at full strength: repeat attendance, star billing, and a steady flow of new works. The model helped make symphonic music a major part of public concert culture, not just a courtly or theatrical add-on.
Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 premiered in London at the King’s Theatre, closing out his final set of twelve ‘London’ symphonies written for these English seasons. The event highlights how, by the mid-1790s, major premieres could move between venues while still being driven by the same subscription-concert economy and its promoters. As an outcome, London’s 1750–1800 concert world left a lasting legacy: public, season-based concerts had become a normal way to hear major new orchestral music.
