Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart reached Vienna while traveling with his Salzburg employer, Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. The trip followed Mozart’s opera success in Munich, but in Vienna he soon faced conflict with the archbishop’s strict control. This arrival opened the final decade of his life, when he tried to build a career in the imperial capital.
After escalating disputes in Vienna, Mozart separated from Colloredo’s service and no longer held a secure court job tied to Salzburg. This break pushed him into a risky but more independent life, earning money through teaching, composing, and performing. Vienna became his main base for the rest of his life.
Mozart’s German-language singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail premiered at Vienna’s Burgtheater. The opera’s success strengthened his reputation with the public and at court, helping him compete in a crowded musical scene. It also showed how he could write for popular taste while keeping high musical standards.
Mozart married Constanze Weber at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. The marriage followed family tension and concerns about propriety and finances, but it created a stable household partnership during his busiest years. Constanze later played a major role in preserving his legacy after his death.

Le nozze di Figaro premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte. The opera combined sharp social comedy with complex ensembles, marking a major step in Mozart’s mature operatic style. It also launched a creative partnership that produced more major operas in the next few years.
Mozart’s Symphony No. 38 in D major (the “Prague” Symphony) premiered in Prague during his first visit there. The event reflected how his music could be more warmly received outside Vienna when local tastes and circumstances differed. The Prague connection soon became important for later commissions and premieres.
Don Giovanni premiered at Prague’s Estates Theatre, again with a Da Ponte libretto. Although not premiered in Vienna, the opera was central to Mozart’s standing in the Habsburg musical world and quickly became part of his reputation as an opera composer. Its success also shows how Mozart’s “Vienna decade” depended on a wider regional network, not just the capital.
Mozart completed the Clarinet Quintet in A major (K. 581) in Vienna, writing for clarinetist Anton Stadler. The piece helped elevate the clarinet as a solo instrument in chamber music by giving it an expressive, leading role. It also reflects Mozart’s Viennese relationships with specialist performers who inspired new kinds of writing.
Così fan tutte premiered at the Burgtheater in Vienna, again with Da Ponte. The opera’s initial performance run was disrupted by the death of Emperor Joseph II and the court mourning that followed. This interruption mattered because it reduced immediate earnings and shows how Mozart’s career could be shaped by political and court events beyond his control.
Mozart’s opera seria La clemenza di Tito premiered at the Estates Theatre in Prague as part of festivities tied to Leopold II’s coronation as King of Bohemia. Writing it in the same period as other major works shows how Mozart balanced practical commissions with personal artistic goals. The commission also underlines how his “Vienna” career continued to rely on patrons and theaters across the Habsburg lands.
Die Zauberflöte premiered in Vienna at the Theater auf der Wieden, a suburban venue associated with Emanuel Schikaneder. Written in German with spoken dialogue, it blended popular theater with serious themes and quickly became a major success. It also became Mozart’s last completed opera, closing his long development as a stage composer.
Mozart died in Vienna at age 35, leaving projects unfinished, including the Requiem (K. 626). His death abruptly ended his attempt to sustain a freelance musical life in the imperial capital. In the years that followed, his Viennese works became a core part of the Classical-period repertory and shaped his long-term legacy.
