Antonín Dvořák was born in the small village of Nelahozeves, in what was then the Austrian Empire. His rural Bohemian background later shaped his interest in folk styles and local musical traditions.
Dvořák began work as director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York. The position gave him financial stability and a global platform, while also pushing him to think about how national traditions could shape concert music in different countries.
In New York, Dvořák composed Symphony No. 9 in E minor, later nicknamed "From the New World." He finished the score in late May 1893, before traveling inland that summer, showing that much of the work was formed from his New York experience and ideas about national style.
Dvořák took his summer vacation in Spillville, Iowa, a Czech-speaking immigrant community. The stay reinforced his connection to Czech identity abroad and became a productive creative period linked to his "American" works.
The New York Philharmonic premiered Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 at Carnegie Hall under conductor Anton Seidl. The enthusiastic reception strengthened Dvořák’s international reputation and made the symphony a lasting symbol of his cross-cultural career.
Dvořák composed the Cello Concerto in B minor during the last academic year of his American residence. The work became a key example of how he combined Romantic symphonic thinking with memorable melody and strong national character, without simply quoting folk tunes.
After three years in the United States, Dvořák and his family returned to Prague for good. Back home, he focused increasingly on works tied to Czech themes and legends, reflecting a late-career shift toward cultural nationalism in subject matter.
The Cello Concerto in B minor premiered in London, with Dvořák conducting and Leo Stern as soloist. The successful premiere helped confirm that Dvořák’s post-American works remained central to European concert life.
Dvořák was elected artistic director of the Prague Conservatory, formalizing his leadership role in Czech musical education. In this position he influenced a younger generation of composers and helped shape a national tradition within professional training.
Dvořák’s opera Rusalka, based on a Czech libretto and drawing on Slavic legend, premiered in Prague. It became his best-known opera and a clear statement of Czech cultural identity within a major European art form.
Dvořák died in Prague, closing a career that linked Czech nationalism with worldwide recognition. By the time of his death, his music had proven that a composer could build an international career while keeping a distinct national voice.
