Puccini’s Tosca premiered at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome on January 14, 1900. The opera’s tightly paced plot and intense conflicts made it a key example of turn-of-the-century Italian operatic drama. It also showed Puccini refining a more direct, realistic theatrical style.
Madama Butterfly premiered at La Scala in Milan on February 17, 1904, but the first version was poorly received. Puccini withdrew it quickly and began revising the opera.
